A partial solar eclipse will be visible over Sri Lanka on June 21, Professor Chandana Jayaratne of the Colombo University’s Department of Physics said yesterday.

He told Daily Mirror that the annular solar eclipse on June 21, which is a partial eclipse, will be the last solar eclipse Sri Lanka will be able to view for another two years.  It will last for nearly two hours and 50 minutes with about 30 per cent of the solar disk covered by the moon at the time of the maximum eclipse.   Prof. Jayaratne said Sri Lanka was currently witnessing an ‘eclipse season’ where three eclipses would occur within a span of 30 days.

On June 5, Sri Lanka was able to witness a penumbral lunar eclipse. The annular solar eclipse on June 21 and another penumbral lunar eclipse on July 4 and 5.
