Illegally imported ethanol stock seized

A consignment of 80 barrels of ethanol stock which was imported illegally was seized by the staff of the Customs Risk Management Unit today. The consignment was found inside a 20-foot container. The container arrived in the country on May 25, 2019, from the ship Ever Diamond. The container was opened at the Grayline II Container yard, Thotalanga by the Customs officers.

Customs Deputy Director Sudath Silva said the 80 barrels contained 15,305 litres of ethanol weighing 15,522 kilograms. He said the consignment had been declared to the customs as Nylon6 Dipped Tyre Cord Fabric which had been imported from the port of Shanghai, China.Pix by Nimalsiri Edirisinghe

    The importation by illegal means will go on, and the authorities should not drop their vigilance even from other issues, although the Covid virus has taken most of their attention away from the rest. Will this consignment also be spirited away or ordered to be released by higher ups or interfering political intervention.
