Arrested for defrauding Rs.50 million

Two suspects were arrested by the Customs for defrauding customs declarations and bringing in a loss of Rs.50 million to government coffers after evading tax laws to import tyres.

Deputy Director of Customs Athula Lankadeva said that one suspect was arrested last week by the customs officers after detecting a breach in VAT figures of the company.

“We raided the building of the company which adjoins the Customs head office. The suspect has being doing this for the last two to three years with his associate who was arrested later”, he said.

The Customs officers are currently investigating into the incident to arrest more associates and hinted that the figure of the amount that has been defrauded will rise. (SD)

    Customs Dept, once known for its notoriety for corruption, now seems to be a highly reformed and patriotic government institution.
