A 67-year-old man set himself on fire outside the Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya (JSS) Office near Sirikotha at Kotte today.
He was identified as Nimal Perera from Wanathamulla and a retired employee of the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB).
Upon retirement, he had been re-recruited by the SLTB when MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara was transport minister.
His employment had been terminated during the tenure of the then transport minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.
The victim had reportedly asked for redress from the JSS and to be reinstated. The man had later set himself on fire and was rushed to the Colombo South Teaching Hospital.

Some compensation should have been given to him instead of re-recruiting again in the same field at the age of 67. The politicians should follow the policy and procedures of the institutions while taking decisions.

The bottom line is to stop political appointments. As for age, it is just a number. Reminds of the movie "The summer of 42".
