Colombo's three main prisons; the Remand, Magazine and Welikada would be soon monitored by CCTV cameras, Prisons Commissioner and Spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said.
“This will ensure the safety of prisons and thwart violence and criminal activities that take place inside prisons,” he said.
Mr. Ekanayake said CCTV cameras are already in place at the Agunukolapelessa and Bosssa prisons while STF personnel have also been deployed outside these prisons so as to beef up the external security at prisons and to get their support when search operations are carried out in prisons.
He said there had been several cases of illegal items such as phones being into prisons over the prison walls.
“However, we have been able to minimise illegal substances being brought into prisons, to some degree,” Mr. Ekanayake said. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

Why to some degree. This should be eliminated completely which is not a difficult task, if drastic measures are taken.

Nonsense, how can CCTV detect what is smuggled inside by Prison Guards themselves? They are the culprits in this whole episode. The complete movement from outside to inside prison needs to be handed over to STF and prison guards should be responsible towards internal administration of Prisoners only.

Why no telephone signal jamming equipment? Very funny we had a 30 year internal war and we did not have that technology .
