Archbishop of Colombo His Eminence Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith said that Buddhism is a great blessing upon Sri Lanka, adding that political leaders should always follow this religious doctrine when taking decisions on behalf of the country.
The Cardinal expressed these views addressing a religious event at a Buddhist temple in Payagala.
“I believe Buddhism is a great blessing upon Sri Lanka. The Stupas and Viharas we see today signify the love, kindness and the affinity the ancient kings showed towards Buddhism. I see this country as a strong nation rooted in Sinhala Buddhist traditions. Therefore nobody can say that this is not a Buddhist country. Those who do are foolish. Our political leaders should understand this. The greatest gift bestowed upon this country is this religion, Buddhism. Therefore safeguarding this religion is our collective duty,” he said.
“We must attempt to make our lives meaningful by following the advise and philosophy of the Sangha. Every decision that we take as leaders of this country should be in accordance with this religious thought. It is not advisable to go against this religion when taking decisions,” the Cardinal added.

This is the first time a religious leader of another denomination preaching in another place of worship instead of giving a sermon in a Catholic church on a day like 1st January.

Yes cardinal Buddhism is a great blessing to this country but the tragedy is that other religions are converting the Buddhists and Hindus to their relegions .

Evangelical Christians should be banned from Sri Lanka.

Buddhism is a great blessing upon Sri Lanka but not this corrupt and child abusing monk plague, which are only concerned with their benefit and never following Lord Buddha's rules.

Yes.The Bhikkhus who want to take politics are free to do so and that after leaving the robes. That is the best service they could do for Buddhism.

So says the leader of the religion that tricked people to become Christian. If he is honest he should embrace Buddhism (not what we witness in Sri Lanka, but the Philosophy). What does hypocrisy look like?
Charmaine Saturday, 02 January 2021 06:02 AM
What’s got into this cardinal Sri Lanka is 99% Buddhist. Blessings come from all religions. Why go to a temple to say this?

We, Buddhists respect to you venerable Sir.

Please learn your history Sinhalese Cardinal hailing from the recently Tamil North Western coast, which was part of the Jaffna kingdom. The North and East of the island had never been Sinhalese or Buddhist but always Tamil and Hindu. His claim that the island is Sinhalese and Buddhist , is like some idiot stating Great Britain is only English and Anglican , forgetting the Scots , the Welsh and their histories.

All the religions are there to make the life of mankind better. No relion is superior to the other. The problem is with the people and the preachers. Unfortunately, SL is a failed Buddhist state because of the preachers and their political activity.

This hypocrite is full of lies and crap..he is such an Ass hole.. Hole is open for any present government MP's and members..

Sri Lankan Buddhism has made Sri Lanka a failed backward primitive satanic genocide committing beggar impoverished country. It has made Sri Lanka dependent on the charity of rich Christian civilised countries. Thai Buddhism is more civilised. The shingalese Uduwatte family in Australia don’t want to return to This primitive country and prefer to remain in Australia where Christianity rules

Ranjith Saturday, 02 January 2021 08:06 AM
Politicians are corrupt they do not believe in their religion from top to bottom all out to make money and more money.

Rusty -- What a waste of a wonderful opportunity to preach the Word of God and tell people of God's majesty, love and forgiveness. High time he got into yellow robes.

I'm a Roman Catholic, but I find the Cardinal is speaking out of the box, or out of his head. We respect all religions, we must have a marginal to what we preach as head of the Roman Catholic Church.

Cardinal is right. Buddhism is a great blessing. But how many really use it to make their lives better. People can't get rid of hate, division, jealousy, theft . Monks have failed in their duties.

Is he promoting to carve out a new Buddhist Chapter and convert and amalgamate Catholic religion as the major partner?
Moorthy Badulla Saturday, 02 January 2021 11:31 AM
You do what you can do in your capacity to the innocent Christians and not to interfere in other religions and disturb the peace and harmony prevails among the various ethnic groups. To be honest, we see Buddhists in Hindu temples and Hindus in Churches and vice - versa. Don't disturb this set up please please please.
Glen Fernando Saturday, 02 January 2021 11:46 AM
Cardinal you either have not read the Bible ( read in particular John 14:6) or you are a hypocrite soliciting political favour
Umar Perera Saturday, 02 January 2021 12:37 PM
Do you believe and practice your own faith? If so, why are you advocating another belief system? You've really lost the plot - or you are currying favour again. Both MR's are suspect!
Bernard Saturday, 02 January 2021 01:07 PM
The Pope should soon issue an edict disrobing him and banishing him to an abyss.
