The Government has decided to limit the maximum number of students in a classroom to 45 from next year, the Education Ministry said.

The Ministry said the cabinet had decided to forward the amendments to the Attorney General for the legal process in this regard.

In 2016, the maximum number of students in a classroom was fixed at 40.

Following a request by the then Education Minister, plans were made to reduce the maximum number of students in a classroom to 35 in 2021.

However, the Ministry said assigning only 35 students assigning to a classroom was impractical.

Therefore, the proposal submitted by Education Minister G.L Pieris was approved by the cabinet to increase the student capacity in a classroom by increasing the quality of education. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

A bad decision for the children as well as teachers! Crowded classroom handling by teachers who have grievances regarding their poor salary and overload of work will take the quality of education nowhere.

A proper education can only be if there not more than 25 till 30 students in one class.
