Sarath Fonseka to arrive in the island from the US tomorrow

Chief of Defense Staff General Sarath Fonseka is scheduled to arrive in Sri Lankan from the United States, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)  informed parliament today.

When contacted army sources confirmed to Daily Mirror that the General would return to the island tomorrow morning, and would not be facing the interview with the US Homeland Security Department that was expected to be held this afternoon.

Meanwhile a Foreign Ministry statement said "The Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka left the United States this morning to return to Colombo. He was not subjected to any questioning prior to his departure by the United States Department of Homeland Security or any other agency of the US Government.

It would be recalled that towards the end of last month, the General who was then in the United States received a letter from the Department of Homeland Security requesting that he present himself for an interview on the 4th of November in Okhlahama City. Subsequently, there was also a telephone call from an official of the Department of Homeland Security to the General.

When this development was conveyed, including by the Ambassador of Sri Lanka in the United States, H.E. the President in his capacity as Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces and the Defence Secretary as the senior most official of that Ministry, were clear that the President and the Government of Sri Lanka would stand firmly behind the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff of Sri Lanka. There would be no room allowed for that high post to be devalued or made vulnerable. Accordingly, Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama immediately invited the US Ambassador in Colombo to see him, to point out that whatever information General Fonseka may have become aware of during his service with the Government of Sri Lanka and in the course of his duties, has a privileged status. Therefore, the Department of Homeland Security of the United States should forthwith desist from any endeavour to interview General Fonseka. A similar representation was made to the US State Department in Washington, through our Ambassador to the United States.

These representations in both Colombo and in Washington were followed by further diplomatic contacts and endeavours, to reinforce the well-founded position of the Government of Sri Lanka. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs appreciates the receptive and constructive attitude adopted by the US authorities, which in turn allowed General Fonseka to leave the United States without any damage to the national interest of Sri Lanka and to the dignity of his Office."

Welcome home sir ! Are you aware that while you were away a lot of dogs barked at your name ? Just now we heard another Tiger turned politician has commented about you with an Indian newspaper. But remember we all are with you, come what may. God bless you General !

Beware of Accidents General.

It appears that JVP has taken over the "ownership" of the Geneal in the last few days. Anyway, I am sure MR, GR & BR are the happiest of this decision. Could that be a temporary happiness?

Great sir! I am so relieved if you are escaping USA!

 Posted By: Weeraya
Gen Fonseka is first and foremost a professional soldier, a man of unparallel achievement. Therefore never doubt that he would ever cave in to juveniles @ DHS.

Thank you Gotabaya giving right advice to Gen Fonseka to return without giving voluntary statements to US authorities. As a team we are unbeatable. Thank you Mr President for foresighted and upright leadership. Thanks Gotabaya for strategic vision and thanks Gen Fonseka for excellent actions and execution. This will be bad news for those who were waiting desaster to happen. Those who wish can contine to lick boots of white masters, diasspora can keep on sending money for their henchmen and bankrupt opposition can still continue to walk down the drain. Sri Lanka will be the final winner.

Great escape! USA just requested him to attend an interview only. Why didn't he face it? Why President, ministers and everyone objected to it? This shows that they attempt to hide some truth. If the oficial stand is that there was no war crime or civilian death etc etc, then they should face whatever comes their way. Suspicion now increases. BTW, why should the JVP inform the parliament instead of the government after all these fuss? I am sure MR wouldn't like it.

If the General has nothing to hide, why not be bold and face the interview?

Welcome Hero!!!

 Posted By: Theshara
What the hell is going on & how does the JVP know of his date of arrival? Have we been misinformed or are they trying to pull our leg here? Something extremely fishy. Things are not fitting in here.

So, would it be a story of the Lion roaring and the Eagle flying away in government news media, and also Bogols crowing about how effective he is in diplomacy. Or, is it all just a storm in a tea cup to take the public for just another ride due to forthcoming elections.

LOL... MR govt is trying to portray as though SF has committed a crime...!

 Posted By: SpaceCab
Well done General, that's the correct way,,,

 Posted By: Deshan
Is he trying to run from American Inland Security? All the news emanating from Sri Lanka simply reveal that SL Govt leaders want to hide from the world. In otherwords there are 'skeletons in the cupboards'.

Ha- Good idea but---???

 Posted By: Wasana
How does the JVP know of the Generals movements! Shooting in the dark I guess...

 Posted By: Tiny
Its interesting that the news came from a opposition party (JVP) and not from the governnment... still no rift between MR and SF?

 Posted By: Hasitha Thumbovilla
Have a safe journey sir....

 Posted By: Mahesh
Its anyones guess who is going to welcome SF at the airport.GOSL politicians will clamour to say that with their intevention SF was saved.

 Posted By: simple mind
"Much ado about nothing" - It was intended to be a VOLUNTARY interview with DHS. I cannot understand why bigwigs in the government made such a big fuss over this issue. Even FM and MR were nervous and panicky over nothing. "All's well that ends well"

JVP informed to parliment??? Since when SF - CDS started reporting to JVP??. Thought defence secretary will announce news about him. What is goin on????.

 Posted By: gamini
at the morment we can say you are the man we trusted so fulfiling is in your hand GENARAl

 Posted By: Gorden
Now wait till he drops the bombshell.

 Posted By: Concerned Citizen
Now why does the JVP trying to take a lead. These stupid people want to fish in muddy waters and they have messed Sri Lankas economy in the 70's 80 and trying hard to take the void created by the LTTE. Tough luck people will teach a good lesson at the next election.

We have to protect our president, defence secretary and General Fonseka from all conspiracies, at the moment conspiracies are at peak.

Great News. Our prayers have really worked. All our best wishes to General Sarath Fonseka for a very safe return to our motherland to save us once again.

 Posted By: Anton
This could have been handled more professionally... It was not an inquiry but a voluntary interview. The SL Gov has over reacted and gave undue prominence to this matter. They could have simply 'requested' the General to say no and get back home...

JVP and the UNP seem to own General Fonseka. The public is more intelligent than JVP and UNP think they are. The 'IDP' tactic is now almost over, they have to think of fresh ideas to retain what little they have now.

Great news! Have a safe and pleasant flight, sir.

 Posted By: karunaratne
Great news! In your face USA. Now start minding your own business instead of trying to question our hero.

 Posted By: Narmada
Speculations were very high about what Genaral Sarath Fonseka was going to do ...! and he did the correct thing which he thourght thats best for the country and now he has to be more cautious living in Sri Lanka as you can't trust the political fellows in Sri Lanka. The President should take very step to protect this war hero of our time.

 Posted By: rohan-usa
The Gen.must stay in Lanka. Wheather he becomes President of S.L.or not he will be Immortal in the eyes of all Patriotice sons & daughters of Lanka.

US will not react like most of the Sri Lankans think. They gather information, facts and evidence over a period and take their own time to prosecute criminals. Once crime was proved they will act swiftly. Whatever said and done in the name of man kind any criminals who involved in genocide and war crime shouldn't let go scout free. However in Sri Lanka we just arrest Tamil civilian create evidence then based on our biased legal system keep the civilians behind the bar for no good reason like how criminals has punished Tissa

"In the same way this brave soldier rid the country of terrorism, he is now on his way home without betraying the nation," Nothing is forgotten & Nothing will ever be forgotten. Thank you so much for giving us a life and restore our national pride. No matter what we are with you Sir !!!

What is all this fuss, and why are people getting exited, If We aren't guilty then why get Upset. This Issue is between American Citizens be Green Card Holder or Regular, I think the American Authorities have every right right to question there own Citizens, I really wonder how many of our Leadership are Citizens of foreign Countries,It is intriguing news that come in the papers and certain media Reports it is mind boggling and unbelievable the question is simple HOW COME?

 Posted By: Je
Good move BUT??? Will it be something like jumping from the frying-pan into the fire??

 Posted By: Baptist
If no one is 'presumed-guilty' then why is it that the prez, and all govt. politikka's are shouting off the roof-tops, as if their rears were on fire !!! What is there to tell, if nothing happened! Mr. Vipul Vishwanath, having read many of your responses I honestly believe they are ???

 Posted By: Hash
Great sir, you're a great person to the nation and you didn't think about yourself . . . . we are always with you!

 Posted By: Chamara
"If the General has nothing to hide, why not be bold and face the interview?"

 Posted By: tomp
Most of the readers who expressed their opinions in favour of covering-up war crimes, are equally criminal.

 Posted By: muflia
Agree with Vipula. Even if Sri Lanka has anything to hide or not, no one has the right to do inquires on our forces. Like U.S.A. and U.K., Sri Lanka is also an independent country and it's not a colony of anyone!

 Posted By: Chethiya
General, watch out! Those who have betrayed you are not going to keep quiet. You are already a threat to them. The fact is that there is no future for you and your family, in Sri Lanka. Whether you cooperate with the U.S. or not, the truth is going to come out. The U.S. has various sources ... including the latest technology. By the way, there are thousands of eye-witnesses held within the barbed-wire, and one-day they will open-up!

 Posted By: rohan
Ezhilini & HoneyBee on the side of the General? You must be kidding! Sinister motives up their sleeves?

 Posted By: Concerned Citizen
Americans had no business to interview S.F., VOLUNTARILY or otherwise, who was on diplomatic duty. Just because you have nothing to hide, you do not have to answer questions from every TOM, DICK and HARRY !!

 Posted By: Wickrama
Wonderful! Surprised some had prayers for S.F. What for? Just a letter and a phone-call, to flee U.S.A.! Well said Nizam, and thats how Western countries punish - No violation of basic human rights! What next? Does this mean that S.F. and G.R. will have to forego their greencard and citizenship?

 Posted By: Dharma
What was the harm in talking to Homeland Security in the U.S.A.? Is there something to hide or someone to protect? What about his Green Card and permanent residence status in the U.S.A.? It's all a mystery! The leading General of the S.L. Army did not want to talk to persons of another friendly country, who: trained our special forces; proscribed the L.T.T.E. as a terror group; and, arrested & prosecuted arms dealers/suppliers of the L.T.T.E. ... It is America’s Pacific Command, which located the movements of Prabhakaran and its leaders in the Wanni, through its Satellite images, and transmitted the information to the S.L. Forces. WHY DID HE REFUSE TO TALK TO FRIENDS?? ... What's the next chapter in this saga?

 Posted By: Faqi
I am disappointed that the head of the S.L. forces, has to run like a rat. Be a man and face the interview! The armed struggle is by far the easiest to win because we have the numbers, but in the latest legal-war, we don’t have the same advantage. This will test the character of individuals!

 Posted By: Rohan Gunatilake
Wickrama: Americans have every right to question a Green Card holder of the U.S.A. ... Now he was on a diplomatic mission? Since when? He was on a private visit to 'update his Green Card' and to visit his two daughters who are residing in the U.S.!

 Posted By: Faqi
Now our intelligent services can grill the general to find out if he did talk to anybody or better about anybody.
