National Chamber of Exporters thanks media

The National Chamber of Exporters (NCE) felicitated the representatives of media organisations at an event held recently to express the appreciation of the chamber for the support extended to the chamber during the year 2015 by highlighting issues related to the promotion and development of exports from Sri Lanka and the role played by the chamber to assist and facilitate the efforts of exporters and service providers to exporters to increase exports.
Chamber Secretary General Shiham Marikar in his welcome address emphasized the importance of the media as a powerful tool of communication. In this context, he added that the media have assisted the chamber immensely to create awareness of the services provided by the chamber to exporters and trade-related activities in general, to promote exports. He further stated that the media have played a constructive role in disseminating important export and trade-related information that was beneficial to the exporter community. 

NCE President Sarada De Silva outlined to the media representatives the objectives and the role of the chamber to support national efforts to accelerate exports which play a vital role in the economic development of the country.
In regard to the Budget proposals of the new government for the year 2016 the president stated that the chamber played an active role, with some of the important macro proposals of the chamber being accepted, and included in the Budget. Among them were the proposal to setup a specialized Export Import Bank, removal of restrictions under the ‘Land Alienation and Ownership Act’ through the removal of the upfront tax on land leases to promote foreign direct investment (FDI), proposal to strengthen the services provided by SLECIC to exporters, setting up of the Cinnamon Development Authority with assistance covering all value chain activities, assistance to promote innovation and differentiation of product and services through venture capital financing, etc., assistance to develop skills in various sectors, development of inland fisheries and the proposal to accede to the Madrid Agreement on Intellectual Property to enable exporters to register trademarks and brands at reduced cost in member countries.

The Secretary General welcomed the move by the government to restructure and empower the Export Development Board and added that the newly appointed chairperson with many years of experience in the field of exports is capable of leading the Export Development Board (EDB) to play a meaningful role. He also commended the proposal to revive the Export Development Council of Ministers to enable make decisions at the highest level.
The chamber thanked the media representatives for the support extended and solicited continuation of their valuable services to the chamber in the future as well. The media representatives who were from Print and electronic media organisations were entertained to cocktails and dinner.
