CBB Sixes 2015 - Supporting a worthy cause through a sporting extravaganza

The Council for Business with Britain (CBB) will be organising its annual triangular sports event (cricket, netball and badminton) for its members for the 15th consecutive year on October 31, 2015 at P Saravanamuttu Stadium (Oval).
This event will bring together many corporates from the business fraternity onto the playing field as over 50 teams compete for the awards on offer.
MAS Holdings has come forward to support the event as the principal sponsor, along with, Hilton Colombo Residences and Qatar Airways as Silver Sponsors and AIA Insurance Lanka PLC with a Bronzes sponsorship. The co-sponsors are Aitken Spence Cargo, ATG Ceylon (P) Ltd, Coats Thread Exports (Pvt.) Ltd, Crystal Martin Ceylon (Pvt.) Ltd, George Sourcing Services, Sudath Perera Associates & Sunshine Holdings PLC.
Organising Committee Chairman Douglas Aceiro confirmed that all proceeds from the day go towards financing the CBB’s English Language Teacher Training Project, which is managed by The British Council in collaboration with the National Institute of Education (N.I.E) and the Education Ministry.
The project has been developed over a number of years and is now working extremely well into its ninth year. Its primary objective is to upgrade the English language capability of pupils in schools throughout Sri Lanka. This is achieved by enhancing the capacity of English teachers, so that they deliver lessons that are more effective. Over 1000 teachers have been trained through this programme, which in turn has had an impact on more than 150,000 students across the island.
The project has trained a cadre of mentors from the Education Ministry’s Regional English Support Centres (RESCs) ensuring a wide geographical coverage across Sri Lanka. The mentors deliver in-service teacher training to teachers in their areas using a distance learning course (branded as ‘the CBB Distance Training Course’) which leads to the internationally recognised University of Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT). Teachers following the training also receive a CBB/British Council (BC) certificate. The project therefore functions on two levels: training mentors to facilitate the CBB distance training course and training teachers through the CBB distance training course.
The organising body of this event and project, which is the Council for Business with Britain (CBB), was established in July 2000 with an objective to enhance promotion of two-way trade between Sri Lanka and the UK and to maintain and foster a harmonious business relationship between the two countries. The CBB has a diverse membership of around 150 companies, making it one of Colombo’s most prestigious networking business associations. To this end, the council organises a series of events throughout the year for the benefit of its members, ranging from luncheon meetings with guests speakers on topical interest to sporting and social activities.
