The main opposition United National Party (UNP) will team up with the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) next Friday to stage a hunger strike demanding the release of lands acquired for the High Security Zones, party officials said yesterday.

The hunger strike will start at 9.00 am and go on till 4.30 pm at Thellipalai, Jaffna.

The TNA said that people of 42 Grama Seva Divisions have been dislodged from their original places of residence due to the acquisition of their lands for the HSZ in the area.  After the event, the UNP will hold talks with the authorities of Jaffna University and Bishop Rev. Thomas Saundaranayagam. Also, the opposition delegation will visit Nagadeepa Temple.

In Kilinochchi, the party is expected to visit the office TNA MP S. Sritharan’s office which was raided recently.

TNA MP M. A. Sumanthiran told Daily Mirror yesterday that his party would work together with the UNP-led opposition alliance in areas concerning the Tamil community. Along with the UNP, he said, ten political parties would join hands with the TNA.

The TNA has demanded, for long, the dismantling of the HSZs in the north and the reduction of military presence. The Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) has also made these recommendations.

However, MP Sumanthiran said that the TNA would not go for an electoral pact with the UNP.

Asked whether the TNA would present its case at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, he said that the party would do it if there was a necessity

“Well, we will do it if necessary. So far, nothing has been discussed.”

Responding to a query about their plan to visit the United States (US), the TNA replied that there was no such need at the moment because the TNA briefed the three US officials who visited the country recently.

“We were planning to go. But, there is no such plan now,” he said. (Kelum Bandara)

Pls leave us, Tamils alone. Brothers in North has still not recovered from war time thinking. We understand it will take time. But dont get on with UNP and fight because this govt though they do lot of good things, does not care about shouting... !! So be happy of what you got, a land without war. Live without getting in to UNP racket. They can not do anything.... !!! TNA is a flop.

Joining Hands And Working Together Is Very Good. But The Thinking Strategies Should Be On The Same Wave-Length.

UNP - RANIL AND HIS GANG HAS DONE IT ONCE AGAIN. THIS IS WORSE THAN GOING TO PAMANKADA INSTEAD OF ALIMANKADA.

No surprise that UNP acted during their time as pro-LTTE which clearly reflects in the peace agreement signed by them.
But people will never install a UNP govet again.

Do you think the affected people will get adequate compensation (if they get compensated at all).

Why should anyone join the ruling party just for the sake of it? that's more like selling out...like what a lot of opposition party members would do. Besides do you think our current government would even want to negotiate (if it does happen, it'll probably be an eyewash)? Besides criticism and opposition must be expected when one lives in a democracy.

I'd love to know what the Tamils (esp those living in the North & East) truly want. Would be quite interesting,

    Ann Monday, 11 February 2013 03:29 AM

This is about something that is happening in the North... not Colombo.

These recommendations were also put forward by the LLRC

    PRASANNAJIT Monday, 11 February 2013 03:32 AM

Nayar, you are in another world not in Srilanka.

    GP Monday, 11 February 2013 03:28 AM

Rohan aliaas Nayer, There is no question of acquirsation of lands by government. But do you justify that chasing the origial tamil land owners from their ancient places and bringing the sinhalese people from south to give away the lands, helping to build the houses and buddhist temple. My dear dont think this in a communal way think practially.

    Shan Monday, 11 February 2013 03:29 AM

Rohan Nayer, you are talking this way, because you or your properties not affected or lost. Those Tamils are not asking anything more, but the right to live in their own lands, like that of the people in South.

Rohan Nayer Monday, 11 February 2013 02:46 AM

according to the Land Act Government can acquire land, obviously affected people will get the compensation therefore join the government the sake of Tamils! therefore you will be able to negotiate a better deal, u know UNP do not have a say now..they have their own problem within the party!

Rohan Nayer Monday, 11 February 2013 02:40 AM

dear Tamil Brother instead of Protest why don't you guys do some piratical Talk with government, why you guys are anti government....do you know Tamils in Colombo live in Peace, why cant you follow the same footsteps...why don't you join with the government the sake of Tamils
