Government Minister Wimal Weerawansa has urged the public to surround the UN office in Sri Lanka and trap the staff inside until a decision is taken by the UN Secretary General to dissolve the panel he appointed on Sri Lanka.

Weerawansa told reporters today that the appointment of the three-member advisory panel by UN General Secretary Ban Ki Moon is the primary step that would prompt the Sri Lankan leaders to be produced to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

“This appointment should not be perceived upon as a simple act because the next step of UN would be to appoint an investigative committee to look into the possible violations of human rights and war crimes. This would eventually lead to the leaders and war heroes of Sri Lanka to be produced to the ICJ,” Weerawansa, who is also the leader of the National Freedom Front, said.

Weerawansa who also spoke of Democratic National Alliance (DNA) Leader Sarath Fonseka’s agreement to talk with the UN panel, described of it as a revolting move towards betraying the country’s sovereignty. (Daily Mirror online)

Foolish politicians giving foolish ideas to the foolish people. May be playing to the gallery.

    Alister Wednesday, 30 June 2010 08:26 AM

I dont agree with WW's style of politics. However my view ia that the UN should not interfere in a country's internal problem. Rather than call for an inquiry on war crimes they should be thankful that a country has got rid of a terrorist organization.

Instead the UN should exert pressure on the government to start negotiations for a political solution acceptable to all minority communities. It should not be a solution only for the tamils. The Muslims Burghers and Malay's should also enjoy equal rights in the land of their birth.

Tharawila kolla Wednesday, 30 June 2010 08:29 AM

If they are in the right path, then why they should fear the UN..This remarks lead us to suspect.

    Sumathipala Wednesday, 30 June 2010 08:31 AM

That is a brilliant start a war with the rest of the world.
In other (intelligent) countries a minister which makes a statement like this, will be removed from his post on the same

No wonder MR is disassociating Wimal. What a way of diplomacy. UN is pressing for HR violations and we have to show them how best we behave as Sri Lankans. Not as an Ex- JVPer who acts as if a Bull in a China shop.

    Rajitha Wednesday, 30 June 2010 08:57 AM

this is the stupidest statement i've ever heard from a politician. Mervyn is way better.

    Alistaire Wednesday, 30 June 2010 08:58 AM

Pretti How exactly is the UN interfering with the country's soverignity by appointing this panel ? As far as I know they are not mounting an invasion.

if there were war crimes committed (For whatever reason) it should be investigated and the wrongdoers brought to justice. It is the only way true reconciliation can take place.
Sri Lanka has a lot more to lose than to gain if it relinquishes it's membership from the UN !
But in all fairness you must write to the UN and tell them to stop this so called infringement.

    Ratan Wednesday, 30 June 2010 07:47 PM

Our people are the fools for electing these guys.

    Nille Wednesday, 30 June 2010 08:25 PM
