The United Nations recalled the commitments made by the Sri Lankan Government in its joint statement with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in May 2009 and urged Sri Lanka to remain committed to its undertaking.

The UN spokeswoman Eri Kaneko, who spoke to Daily Mirror, urged the Sri Lankan Government to constructively engage and cooperate with the OHCHR in implementing the resolution adopted at the 25th UNHRC session in March.

She made these comments in response to several statements made by the government recently on the upcoming investigation by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on alleged violations of human rights and humanitarian law during the conflict period in Sri Lanka.

Ms. Kaneko also referred to External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris’s statement that the resolution was not welcome in Sri Lanka.

“The Secretary-General has consistently underlined the importance of an accountability process for addressing violations of international humanitarian and human rights law in Sri Lanka. He welcomes the determination by the HR Chief to advance accountability and promote lasting peace and reconciliation in the country,” Ms. Kaneko said adding that the UN would remain engaged with Sri Lanka to support efforts to make progress in accountability, reconciliation and a lasting political solution. Finally it's out now, the government has agreed by committing on proper investigation and reconciliation way back in 2009.. This what UNP has being saying ..

Now MR cannot back down from it, it's in writing and sealed and sighned by both parties..

MR now don't scream saying UN is interfering on SL matters, after you have agreed.. Truth is out people...

Mahinda Rajapakshe and his bone lickers have and will project this as a threat to SL sovereignty merely to hoodwink the electorate, save its skin and prolong its tenure. UNO nor UNHRC aren't on a witch-hunt on SL people. It's merely holding the regime to honour its commitment that was signed sealed and delivered then.

Sir, you are barking the wrong tree. Sri Lanka will do exactly what warrants at any given time and the circumstances. So, this day and age don't expect any old school stuff but reality.

Concerned Citizen Saturday, 12 April 2014 12:06 PM

Did Ban Ki Moon keep his promise? When it was pointed out his panel led by Dharusman was illegal, he promised it was only a panel to advice him and not an investigation, nor would the report be placed in the public domain. What did he do? Is not this report with full of assumptions and without any witnesses, the main weapon used by Navi Pillai and the hostile nations? Further, all statements and conduct hitherto by the OHCHR has shown it is more like a biased Kangaroo court and Sri Lanka should keep it at arms length, because the anti-SriLankan report they want to release could already be finished..

Did Ban Ki Moon, Prabakaran and Ranil keep their promises?

UN is not waiting for your referendum. They have had their votes at Geneva. You can have 99% supporting SL Govt. but no use.

Sri Lanka is again starting war in North. The only possible way the present president could win the next election to create problems within society. Now Sri Lanka is not safe to live at all. all educated people are leaving the country.

    Hi ABC,

It was with the full cooperation of the International Community including India, USA etc we managed to defeat LTTE. If not, Srilanka would have been divided into two by now. Don't make silly comments if you do not know the facts.

    pandora Saturday, 12 April 2014 09:51 AM

This government is doing all the WRONG things that international community would want them to do.
After funding over millions of dollars in aid to building the Mahaweli project to J'pura Hospital/Parliament etc. for the benefit of all the sri lankan's it is stupid to believe international community to pose a blind eye if they see that those aid does not benefit all the sri lankans. If the government doesn't cooperate with IC then we will see the situation deteriorate beyond anyone's control. Sanctions are inevitable if that is the case. That is the last thing anyone wants.

Mr Moon why only Sri Lanka. You must make the US, UK and their allies too accountable for the crimes committed by them if you are truly a man.
