Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will hold talks with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa next week in Myanmar, three months after skipping a visit to the island nation to attend Commonwealth heads of government meet due to pressure from Tamil parties and within government.

Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh today said the Prime Minister will meet Rajapaksa on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit on March 4 in Myanmar.

"The Prime Minister will be meeting the President of Sri Lanka," she said.

The Foreign Secretary was replying to a question on whether Singh will be meeting Rajapaksa as Sri Lankan has rejected a call by the UN for an independent international probe into allegations of war crimes.

Sri Lanka has come under increasing international pressure to probe allegations of excessive civilian deaths during the final battle that ended in May 2009. A crucial UN Human Rights Council resolution on Sri Lanka is coming up in March.

Asked whether India will support the resolution against Sri Lanka, the Foreign Secretary refused to give a direct reply saying it has to see the text of the resolution and examine other issues.

The Prim Minister had decided not to travel to Sri Lanka in November last year after Tamil Nadu political parties and Congress leaders from the state opposed the visit alleging that the Sri Lankan government has committed atrocities and human rights violations against Tamils.

On Monday, the UN called for an independent international probe into allegations of war crimes in Sri Lanka during the final battle with the LTTE, prompting an angry reaction from Colombo which today rejected the demand and slammed it as "unwarranted interference".

In a report, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navy Pillay asked for setting up of an independent probe and said Sri Lanka had "consistently failed to establish the truth".

Rajapaksa's government has already rejected the demand. (Source: Business-Standard)

What about crimes commited after the war?

    sam Thursday, 27 February 2014 08:37 AM

Can you please list out the names and when they got murdered. So that people will realize you are telling the truth. Why all hiding behind the curtain and giving increasing counts day by day.

We don't need your forgiveness. The 200 Muslims who got butchered by your LTTE inside Kathankudi mosque. Ask from them for forgiveness. The School buses and hospitals your LTTE freedom fighters bombed, ask from the innocent people for forgiveness. People who were inside the Temple of the Tooth when your LTTE freedom fighters blew it to pieces, ask them for forgiveness. Let me put this straight, killing terrorists was never a crime. Killing those who were responsible such heinous crimes is never a crime. Ask for forgiveness from Sinhalese and Muslims as well.

What both killers are going to discuss must how to cover up killing of 129,649 Tamils in 2009. Ram Batti

Tell the UN to investigate Americ's war crimes first. After that they can think of other countries.

You cannot have economic development on borrowed money before an international investigations is held. All those helping SL, demand an investigation before they can lend money to a poor country.

I think Tamils have a right to have their own country. But the largest number of tamils live in South India and therefore a separate country may be formed there. Of course as historically this country may try to influence Sri Lanka by military or otherwise which we should be able to face.

So I propose a separate country be formed in South India for the Tamils like Parkistan was formed for the Muslims.

Mejority Sri Lankan peopel no need a investigation on war crime becouse it is meaningless compare with other western countries activities, but here many spacess regarding reconcilliation so those parties should give their support and encourage regarding reconcilliation by giving moral on politcal and economic developemnt.

who has no guts to stand up to the Tamil nadu politicians in his own country. Best to ignore this coward. What good could he do - absolutely nothing.

    Senathy Wednesday, 26 February 2014 07:10 PM

Further, there would be no reconciliation until people who committed genocide are punished. So that the Tamils who witnessed all these atrocities can finally forgive and move on.

    Senathy Wednesday, 26 February 2014 07:09 PM

Just because it didn't affect you. you didn't get anyone butchered by an invading army, doesn't mean others don't want the international probe into the atrocities.

You can also say Sudan was split into two, then Ceylon should also be split into Eelam and sri lanka because countries gets split elsewhere as well.

    Senathy Wednesday, 26 February 2014 07:06 PM

In democracy, the central government should accommodate all side (including minority concerns), quite unlike in banana republic.

    Saskia Wednesday, 26 February 2014 06:52 PM

Majority of SL people are Sinhalese and they never allow a war crime investigation against their sons who have committed the war crimes.

    Fawzan Wednesday, 26 February 2014 06:07 PM

Agreed that he does not have a back bone. If he has, he will not stop screening "no fire zone" in India or tolerate killing of over 400 Indian fishermen

    Fawzan Wednesday, 26 February 2014 06:02 PM

Hi SG, Just because majority endorse war crime does not mean it should be legalised. If all 20 million people wanted to take your life for a fun, no one will give the power to take your life. Please do not think like a criminal.

    Ari Wednesday, 26 February 2014 04:55 PM

Singh will only sing for his supper. He has no backbone. Tamilnadu asks him to jump, he will ask how high.
