A petition has been filed in Court seeking the “release” of missing freelance journalist and cartoonist of Lanka E-News Prageeth Ekniligoda. The Petitioners cited DIG Nandana Manasinghe of the CID, OIC of the Homagama Police, IGP Mahinda Balasooriya and the Attorney General as respondents.

The Court of Appeal today re-fixed for support on May 10 the Habeas Corpus application filed for the missing freelance journalist. The petition was filed by his wife Mrs K.M.S.P.Ekniligoda and his two children S.S.Bandara Ekniligoda and H.D.Sooriyia Ekniligoda.

The petition was filed requesting a writ order directing the police to produce Prageeth Ekneligoda (50) before the Court of Appeal.

The petition seeks a writ order to be issued to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the DIG of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the OIC of the Homagama Police, who have been named respondents in the petition.

The petition, filed through attorney at law Sunil Watawala states that Prageeth Ekneligoda was a person who acted against the political situation in the country while staying within the legal framework.

The petition points out that after General Sarath Fonseka came forward to contest the recently concluded presidential election, Ekneligoda had supported his presidential bid through the media.

Petition states that Prageeth Ekniligoda is being held under unlawful custody/detention since January 24, 2010 either by and/or with the knowledge of the 1st Respondent DIG Nandana Manasinghe, Homagama OIC and the IGP or anyone and/or more of them for the reasons set out in the petition. (SSS)

I don't think any one is bothered about this anymore because the elections are over. UNP, JVP are all silent on this issue & the poor Ekniligoda family is left alone. Very soon it will happen to Ms.Anoma Fonseka too. Dirty politics of SriLanka.

This is the worst regim for journalist. In prvious regims at least the dependents knew the fate of such journalist but in this case this poor wife & two children have to live in the dark of finding clues as to what has happend to their husband / Father. It's easy to report or to comment like this but to feel what this family is going through only few can. One day all this will be accounted for & we pray it will be not so long. if not there will be so many "Ekiniligoda"s who have to sacrifise their lifes for media freedom

Are you kidding ??? In 1988-90 era, what happened to journalist like Richard, Premakeerthi and many more. Burnt on tyres, floated in rivers, beheaded and few able to escape after being tortured. were you asleep in that era ?? Altogether over 100,000 were killed including journalist. Most articles also sensored. It it better than this ??

Why not petition the new deputy Minister of Media to find him ? According to the supporters of the government, Dr Maravin is a highly capable man.

However the sinhalese have voted MR with a majority. So then why complain, just learn to accept the culture of the citizens and their leaders. Simple.

It is sad when something like this happens the apologists of this regime justify it by saying that this type of thing also happened in '89. Two wrongs do not make a right, we are now living in a completely different time to that. Those that were responsible received their JUST rewards. The same REWARDS await those responsible for present day events. Do not do unto others what you would not want others to do unto you.
