Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa today rejected the charges that his wife, former first lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa had transferred the funds of the Siriliya Saviya Foundation to her private account and purchased a house in Colombo 5 using the money.

"Former president Chandrika Kumaratunga alleged at a news conference that my wife had purchased a house from the funds of the Siriliya Saviya Foundation. This is a baseless allegation. It was my wife's nephew, Dilshan Wickramasinghe who lent her a sum of Rs. 35 million to purchase the said property,"

Rohan Weliwita, media coordinator of Mr. Rajapaksa said that these facts were recorded in both Dilshan Wickramasinghe’s and Mr.Rajapaksa's income tax returns. He said the property is being used as a storehouse now.

Mr. Rajapaksa had also rejected the claim that two vehicles belonged to the Presidential Secretariet had been deployed to the Siriliya Saviya Foundation. "The said two vehicles were offered by the World Food Organization (WFO) as a gift. They had been left without using because of the excessive taxes imposed by the Customs," he said. (LSP)

The corruption allegations will have to be expedited if the new regime is serious about ridding the country of corruption and fraud. The way investigations are being PURPOSEFULLY dragged it appears that at the end of the day NOTHING is going to be done.

    Mala Monday, 15 June 2015 07:42 AM

These facts are acceptable, coming from a virtuous individual.Statistically, it would be interesting to know how many persons (who the law suspect as being involved in any anti-social activity) really admit their mistakes.

Soma Aunty Monday, 15 June 2015 07:32 AM

Jayalalitha in Tamil Nadu used the same LENDING logic to escape jail. Income Tax will not be charged on debt.

    Premalal Sunday, 14 June 2015 09:02 PM

Stating transactions in the income tax forms does not make it legitimate. In fact the high and mighty use the income tax department to clean up their loot because the department is afraid to question the legitimacy of such transactions. For instance where did the lender have such amount of money kept? If in a bank how was it accumulated? If it is a loan what is the repayment plan and how is the borrower generate funds for repayments?

    Sikuru Sunday, 14 June 2015 08:42 PM

MR is totally stupid! Even Dilshan Wickramasinghe has a lot of corruption allegations and he is the brother of the well known thief Nishantha Wickremesinghe of the SriLanakn airlines
