Deputy Media Minister Mervyn Silva, who assumed duties at his Ministry in Colombo today, made a pledge to resign from his new post if there are allegations against him and if such allegations are proven to be true.

The Deputy Minister, who is known for his frequent clashes with the media, also urged journalists and media institutions to contact him directly if they have any concerns noting that he even sleeps separately from his wife at home just to make sure his mobile is reachable even at night.

The Deputy Minister, who is now the acting Media Minister in the absence of President Mahinda Rajapaksa who is in Bhutan for the SAARC summit, said that he will setup a complaints desk at the Media Ministry for journalists to lodge complaints or make suggestions.

He also mentioned the name of one electronic media institution saying that media house has done a lot of wrong. However he was later seen serving cake to the crew of the same media institution who were also at hand at the event this morning when he took office.

“If I have done anything wrong against the media and if there is proof then I will resign from my Ministry,” Minister Silva added.

Minister Silva meanwhile added that the “Rajapaksa Company” has done a lot of good to the country and if not for them this country would suffer the same fate as some western countries who are facing economic issues. (Daily Mirrior online)

This is a good lesson for Sri Lankan media.. You shouldn't underestimate anybody. We can see a good comedy drama in time to come..

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 05:58 AM

How many time he could resign for all the promises that he made on stage as well as front of media...

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 06:01 AM

this guy is a joker ...he will never keep up to his promises ....

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 06:03 AM

Yes minister you have to curb these wrong doings to the society by media goons and correct them. Sri Lanka is not a western country, we are Asians.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 06:05 AM

Will he resign for sure, if he is proved guilty? But, he has not kept to his word 'NOT TO COME TO PARLIAMENT IF, AT LEASE, ONE OF THE DNA IS ELECTED"!

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 06:16 AM

We saw on TV how he entered (presumably forcibly) Rupavahini with several outsiders and including his security - and intimidated and harrassed the staff there. The staff retaliated in self-defence. There was a presidential inquiry on this, though nothing is known of the outcome of this inquiry.

    He is flippant.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 06:25 AM

Jehan, you must be an idiot or something. Be western or Asian; Freedom is freedom. I dont see anywhere, which implies two different types of freedom, one for Asian and other for Westerners.

A challenge to the critics of mervyn.
Now find facts to prove to get rid of him.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 11:23 AM

I thought Dr Mervyn Silva is no longer in the Parliament after his resignation on DNA winning seats. Why is all this fuss, when he is no more there!!

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 06:36 AM

Who dares to come forward to prove ? Are there any ?

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 06:37 AM

He said if any one from Gen. Fonsekas party is elected in Gampaha district He will resign. in that case he should not be an MP even now.

Be polite; write diplomatically; even in a declaration of war one observes the rules of politeness.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 11:43 AM

    mervin start to fire..???

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 07:07 AM

Mervyn Silva is a fine statesmen and a simple 'man of the people'. I have seen him walk amoung the people and attend to their needs. He is both humble and gentle in his approach. The media has portrayed him in an unfair light - it is a vast exageration. I invite you all to come to Kelaniya and see the great work done by our son of the soil. It was Mervyn that re-initiated the colombo-airport highway project that passes through Kalaniya. Thanks to him, the project is once again active and people have received jobs as a result. Long live Mervyn Silva - Sri Lanka's most under-rated politician!

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 07:09 AM

He should have already resigned, because 7 of JVP/DUF members are in parliament.
He challenged that he will resign if at least 1 is elected.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 07:12 AM

    Jehan,
There is a law in the country. If u feel its not suitable, then request to change the law. Law is not there to break. Whether its done by Wstern Mafia & SL mafia is no difference. Freedom is Freedom. Agree with Migara.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 11:54 AM

    Hello mate,
Are you from a different planet.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 07:17 AM

What do you know about him apart from your self-inflicted fury at him? He is one of those guys who rose in preferential vote battle from 2000 in the last time to some 100000 this time. Have you been to his electorate? He is good hearted.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 07:25 AM

I tend to agree with Jockstrap as demonstrated by 150,000 in his electorate recently. This time I am sure he will keep to his promise

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 07:26 AM

    well said!

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 12:06 PM

if there is anyone dar to challnge the Honerable minister? I suspect if anyone will ever risk their life to challnge his integrity.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 07:37 AM

    This man never resigns.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 07:46 AM

How sad about our country. First of all President should make a very decipline Cabinet to face the international community and go forward. Other countries will evaluate the level of our country by people like these.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 07:50 AM

Not only this man, all our politico, none will resign ever

    Man with Backbone in UPFA

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 08:17 AM

MR has made a wrong decision with media by appointing a most educated person like Marvin in parliment .MR & PM please change him immediately to any other minior post.

    Friday, 30 April 2010 05:06 AM

Dr. M has become a 'MEDIA MEGA STAR" what a creative distruction of Sri Lankan media. MR has cleverly appointed him I am not endorsing Dr. M's behaviour at all, by trying to destroy him through media he managed to get 150000 preferences, he knows how to handle people

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 08:49 AM

sena kumar i think you need to take some medicine from this Dr.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 08:50 AM

Dr.sarath amunugama.or Mr.w.j.m. lokubandara why arent they suitable for this great ministry.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 09:09 AM

Prsident has selected the correct person for the minsitry. Let him to handle the position. Absoultely, he is a kind hearted person. Please visit Kelaniya and speak to the people and then you will come to know. you cannot approve the media always. They did so many wrong things too in the interest of country. But not all the media. Guys why cant you remember during War time behaviour of some media. This government had to handle war against media too. That is becuase of overseas influences.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 09:22 AM

Dr.sarath amunugama is the ideal and decent person to do this job. My dear Rupavahini, MTV friends....... pls be ready to get masathosa and dhal curry at any time by Mervin.....

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 09:38 AM

Honourable Dr. Mervyn Silva, please don't ever think of resigning - the country and the people need you so badly!!

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 02:47 PM

His sleeping arrangements with his wife is one bit of information that I could have lived without. Anyhow I like how all these characters are making marvellous and fairly incredible promises.....always the same sad routine!

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 03:22 PM

It appears most of the people who comment here, have never met the man. Most likely, Its the news reports (true or false) that make people leave negative comments. We all would like to hear from people who have had first hand experience meeting and dealing with this individual such as" Dave" & "Jockstrap". If he is such a rascal, why is he popular in the electorate of Kelaniya.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 04:40 PM

Have you a licence to resign?
