The Inspector General of Police (IGP) N. K. Illangakoon said that currently the police department is going through a massive restructuring programme to increase the capabilities and efficiency of the department. A committee on police restructuring and supervision is looking into malpractices and inefficiency at police stations and police projects.

"We have been receiving many complaints from the public that a number of police stations are not taking steps to resolve their complaints. We have also been informed that there are several inefficient projects being carried out by the police department,” a senior police officer said.

“We will make surprise visits to such police stations. The main objective is to tackle inefficiency in the police department, he said, adding, "Our theme is a people friendly prestigious professional police service. We will work and reduce inefficiency in the police.”

The public relief office at the Police Headquarters which was set up on the initiative of former IGP Balasuriya receives most of the complaints about shortcomings and negligence caused by police stations.

The committee will take steps to evolve a mechanism to provide a satisfactory service to the public and also to reduce shortcomings in the police that cause hardships to the public. (SD)

Very good initiative. The general public of this country is waiting to see the day that the police accept the people as friends and people see the police as helpers which in fact is happening in other developed countries. Why can`t we make our police department the best people friendly and service oriented department of the government. I challenge the present IGP . I am sure the present governemnt , the president and the defence secretary will give you the blessing.

Quote:"Our theme is a people friendly prestigious professional police service, we will work and reduce inefficiency in the police.”... Now Now...it sounds really good but the application is gonna be a huge task for this efficient speaker. Still for all, talk is cheap my friend. We, as citizens in this land have heard many beautiful songs like this for decades by politicians, beaurocrats and the police and we danced to it many, many times! I guess we all know how that works ha?!?

    Give him the opportunity folks.

IGP has addressed the real issue. Give him the space to implement.
