The Higher Education Ministry, with the support of the Defense Ministry, has decided to conduct a two-week leadership training programme at selected army camps for the next batch of university students, officials said.

Ministry Secretary Dr. Sunil Jayantha Navaratne told Daily Mirror that all students selected for university would be given a chance to improve their presentation skills, visionary thinking and conflict resolution skills.

Also, Dr. Navaratne said that university students’ ability to work as a team would also be improved at this training programme scheduled to commence in May.

“They must have leadership skills such as patience to listen to others and take decisions. We need good leaders to develop the country. Without good leaders, we cannot develop the country,” he said.

He said, “There is a misconception because the programme is going to be conducted at army camps. We selected army camps because they are the only venues that can accommodate well over 20,000 students at once. This is a nationwide programme.” (Kelum Bandara)

I think our uni students already have enough leadership training. What they need is training not on how to give leadership but how to obey the leadership provided by university academic staff.

This is a wonderful and very useful program for University Students. I am a Scientist in a reputed Pharm. company in USA and we get this kind of leadership training at work. I wish I got this trianing when I was at Kelaniya university. It is true, that our contry is desperatey need good leaders to take our country forward. this is really good. we really feel that uni guys should undergo some kind of a thing like this. they always think that they rule everything. they dont see any value in this free education system as soon as they get into the uni. good move govt. make the training tight.. ;)

Major Senaratne Wednesday, 19 January 2011 05:11 AM

Very good initiative. Though two weeks is too short ,even a little leadership skills & dicipline instilled to the future leaders will only do good to our country as a whole.

It is very hard to implement any new gaze within our land. Almost all comments reflect the common negative ideas of our community.

beginning of the end of JVP dominance in local universities. JVPeras will find a hard time ragging the freshers who had gone through military training. brilliant!

Give that training to the 'KASIPPU MUDALALI" at village. Coz' they are the people become so called leaders in our country, not the educated people.
