A Norwegian national who works as a Computer Engineer at the Katunayake BOI was assaulted last evening in Negombo. The victim's vehicle was also damaged during the incident. At present he is receiving treatment at the Negombo hospital.

Police investigations have revealed that the incident occurred as a result of a dispute between the victim and the suspect over suspending him from work. The suspect was arrested and is to be produced before the Negombo magistrate today. (Daily Mirror online)

Do you know that there are truck drivers from china ? employed in hambanthota port project ? if everyone think your way more than a million will stand in sri lankan air port tomorrow at the arrival !!

Nihal Fernando Monday, 09 August 2010 07:51 AM

Some try to display their white supremacy to Sri Lankans. In Saudi Arabia a foreigner can't fire an Arab even if the foreigner is in a senior manager position. .

Channa Soysa Monday, 09 August 2010 07:57 AM

Don't we have good Computer Engineers in Sri Lanka???? What a joke to have a Norwegian in this capacity employed by the BOI. Why can't the Government give these jobs to our Sri Lankans. Sri Lankans have to find jobs in the Middle East and work like slaves because jobs back home are very conveniently given to the Sudda fellows and they are given fabulous salaries. What a pitty. This must change. Are the authorities sleeping? Wake up guys!!!!!

    JK Monday, 09 August 2010 08:13 AM

I'm from northern Europe and currently working in Sri Lanka. I don't make a million Rs a month, far from. And I'm not here to boss around people, I'm here to learn because like "Channa Soysa" and "OneLanka" mentioned you have a lot of skilled people in this country.

simple mind Monday, 09 August 2010 08:15 AM

these guys doesn't understand that you made the comment in tongue in cheek.

roshan raz Monday, 09 August 2010 08:16 AM

managment of a company can hire or fire any person as long as there is a valid reason. the nationality of the person is not relevant. this engineer has been given the authority. this has nothing to do with our national issues. tamara why dont you start reading books and develop your general knowledge a bit..

roshan raz Monday, 09 August 2010 09:05 AM

you have proved that your nick name perfectly fits you.

    RajasH Monday, 09 August 2010 09:21 AM

may be BOI bought some specific s/w from a Norwegian company and may be this guy is training local Sri Lankans.
    think positively.

roshan raz Monday, 09 August 2010 09:32 AM

this is not saudi. we have so many criminals... and we dont have death sentence here..

roshan raz Monday, 09 August 2010 09:33 AM

our sri lankans are more racial than any other western countries

    R Monday, 09 August 2010 09:41 AM

Exactly! You know he can be a LTTE supporter. The guy who beat him is a patriotic hero.

    Sam Monday, 09 August 2010 09:44 AM

Oh dear, please don't make a mountain of a mole-hill. Assault cases happen everywhere in the World - tell me one country it doesn't happen.

No need to generalize and create a national crisis over this, just because the assaulted was a foreigner. Let the law take its course and deliver a verdict. We don't need to come to a judgment.

    Ravi Monday, 09 August 2010 09:46 AM

From the majority of the comments, it appears there are many uneducated Sri Lankans that think very highly of themselves.

Well, get off your high horse and wake up to reality!

    OneLanka Monday, 09 August 2010 07:35 AM

Why is Sri Lanka wasting dollars when local talent is available. Immigration should check and place public notice prior to granting work visa..............I can state many companies where foriegner are employeed for over SLRs 1 Million per month, when Sri Lankans are made redundant and when local talent is available.

It is high time we opened our eyes.............

    saman Monday, 09 August 2010 10:45 AM

    Totally agree !

    Rohan Monday, 09 August 2010 11:05 AM

Then one country is Srilanka. Here we do not kill assault people, we just kill people. We do feel assaulting is not brave enough. In this case the local workier is a real coward.

    Rohan

I guess you have never encountered a Galle Face tout. Nice smile, but beware the bite!

Leslie Gunasekera Monday, 09 August 2010 12:31 PM

    Sam,

Your reply restored my belief that there are still wise people in SL

Podi Guru Monday, 09 August 2010 12:34 PM

    OK, start naming the companies!

    Kamal Monday, 09 August 2010 12:35 PM

Can send us your boat back so we can come there too ?

    citizen1 Monday, 09 August 2010 03:45 PM

Subleties are lost on the masses. Things need to be delivered on a silver platter.

    Sam Monday, 09 August 2010 03:48 PM

God save Lanka!!! Tamara your comments were delightful to read and I can clearly see that, you were talking from your rear end!

    DON Monday, 09 August 2010 04:04 PM

Good example to show what is our working culture now. We have ben clearly shown the way to go. Assault and cause physical hurt when in disaggrement or when having opposite views

    MJ Tuesday, 10 August 2010 12:49 AM

I can sense a distinct hint of Sarcasm in your comment Tamara :) - you WERE kidding right? :D

Bird Eye Tuesday, 10 August 2010 03:16 AM

This kind of thinking is almost over in this world, in any country, foreigners are not allowed to fire locals.

    Che Monday, 09 August 2010 06:10 AM

Prakharan has left behind a Legacy, Sri Lankans are now Just as Bloodthirsty as He was,and it maybe worse.

    MoMo Monday, 09 August 2010 05:10 AM

Work should be work for all, doesn't matter if its a Sri Lankan , Indian, American or Norwegian, If someone does something wrong they should face the consequence...,

moada yakka Monday, 09 August 2010 05:23 AM

Fully agree with Tamara. I see no reason why the S Lankan had to assault the foreigner. Some of these foreigners think they have dropped from heaven and behave like gods when they come to a third world country. High time they were taught a good lesson.

    sltk2004 Monday, 09 August 2010 05:23 AM

All patriotic Sri Lankans should get organized and stage a demonstration in front of the Norwegian embassy.

    Aramat Monday, 09 August 2010 05:38 AM

Though liveware is most valuable in any industry, 'smile' is less important if he/she cannot work.

    Crasher Monday, 09 August 2010 05:39 AM

you guys are crazy... why demonstrate infront of the nowegian embassy. he might have suspended him for his behavior in work and its his duty as a higher official. see what he did after he got suspended.. and u guys want to support a thug like him. that's why people like Mervin are still in the cabinet.

    suwimal Monday, 09 August 2010 05:43 AM

No, death unto fast would be better!

    Burt Monday, 09 August 2010 05:44 AM

How dare he fires a person when he has the option to tie himm to a tree.

Who does the Norwegian think expecting a Sri Lankan to work.

    UJ Monday, 09 August 2010 05:45 AM

Great comments and this shows the friendly attitude of the sri lankan. Way to go and you guys are much capable of making this country a Bana Republic!

Riri yakka Monday, 09 August 2010 05:50 AM

Though liveware is the most important in any industry 'smile' is less important if he/she not fit for work. Let this thug try some unproductive redundant data entry in Govt. organization.

Sri Lankan Monday, 09 August 2010 05:56 AM

I fully agree with Crasher, if he is in th wrong he got to pay for it. That 's the way forward for all sri lankans.

    R Monday, 09 August 2010 06:04 AM

That happen only in government offices.

    TMA Monday, 09 August 2010 06:06 AM

This is an act of patriotism. We're with the SL employee suspended from wrk. (ok, even if he is wrong, like stole sumthin from the office, he still hit a Norwegian imperialist)

    Tamara Monday, 09 August 2010 04:46 AM

Sri Lankans are the most friendly people in the world. This Norwegian was most likely a LTTE supporter. He also has no right to fire a Sri Lankan from work. Even if he did something wrong the worker should have been excused since he was a friendly Sri Lankan with a 'smile'.

    i got it Monday, 09 August 2010 06:12 AM

I think no body understood the sarcasm in the above comment :)

    great work Tamara!

    jay Monday, 09 August 2010 06:17 AM

Think twice, before you hire( recruite) sombody. In case of firing ( terminate) somebody, do it in a professional way. In Sri Lanka there is no unemployment insurance. Therefore,If sombody lost the job, there no way to survive. I would go crazy if this happened to me. But I do not approve of violent behaviour.

    citizen1 Monday, 09 August 2010 06:26 AM

How about death unto fast with a 'smile'?!

    valentine Monday, 09 August 2010 06:46 AM

Weldone guys, majority of the replies are civic and hardlined which means, though the war is over, literally it is not and will not be as many of us having this mentality. Please stop saying "Sri Lankans are friendly people". Just because a person smiles and talks friendly doesn't really mean 'friendly'. It is the mentality that matters. We have a long way to go.

    kumar Monday, 09 August 2010 06:48 AM

Are you kidding?. Your people can't even live with your own citizen peacefully and comparing with the world. Have you ever been in a foreign country? I don't think so.

    DHA Monday, 09 August 2010 06:49 AM

In our country sad to say many are treated very badly....specially low level workers.....they are paid poorly with poor facilities....almost like dogs which provokes them to turn on each other....!!!

    sltk2004 Monday, 09 August 2010 06:54 AM

We Sri Lankans are always right. So it must be the foreigner who is at fault. He should be imprisoned for what he has done.

    malkanthi Monday, 09 August 2010 06:58 AM

Without knowing the real situation, we should not jump into wrong conclusions!

Herman Munster Monday, 09 August 2010 06:58 AM

Agree with jay, Probably the local was humiliated or wrongfully accused who knows, otherwise he wont be taking such action, or he is violent by nature. Also some (few) foreigners specially from northern europe are rude, known fact, specially in a country like SL they tend to be more highminded and put SLs to a lower level (master mentality). Sometimes I think forigners must respect our culture and values, because when u are in their land they dont give a damn thing about you (most SLs dont understand this)

    Sk Monday, 09 August 2010 07:11 AM

Where do you get ideas of hammering people because he expeld the person who did wrong. Have you ever worked? In the past may be you can not remember but I can & I know that there are few times high ranking officers had been killed because they sacked the employee who had done theft and so on. do you think all their acts are right? Please do not judge people by their countries. All the Norwegians are not supporters of LTTE but they are very peace loving people.

    mich Monday, 09 August 2010 07:17 AM

Your people already in Oslo & fighting with each other for LTTE funds. Better go now or you will loose your share.
    looser!!!
