The police department has been able to complete only 50 per cent of criminal cases reported annually since 2004, Parliament was informed today. During the first nine months of this year, 40,560 cases were reported but only 16,406 of them have been resolved.

According the documents presented in the House by the government, 59,662 cases had been reported in 2004, and of them, only 31,267 cases had been resolved.  In 2005, 60,946 cases were reported and 31,539 resolved.

The government said that 61,797 cases were reported to the police department in 2006, and only 29,777 of them were completed.  Out of 57,827 cases reported in 2007, 29,187 had been finalised. In 2008, the number of cases reported was 60,064 and the number resolved 29,966.

In 2009, the department received complaints into 57,944 cases, and completed 30,804 of them.  Last year, the total number of cases reported was 60,091 and the number completed 31,814.

UNP Dayasiri Jayasekera said that it is not something to be complacent that the police department has been able to complete 50 per cent of cases only every year.

Leader of the House Nimal Siripala de Silva replied that it had been impossible to complete the matters in this case due to delayed court cases. Also, he said that it sometimes takes a long time to get the Government Analyst’s reports.

“Otherwise, there is not an increase in the crime wave,” he said. (By Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)

Only the minor cases are solved. Big ones are hushed up, evidence destroyed or suspects sent abroad. Case closed!!
