At least 50 Sri Lankan Tamil asylum seekers, who were deported from Britain, arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) last morning on an overnight charter flight, the police said.
An official of the Airport Immigration Department confirmed that the 50 persons including eight women from the United Kingdom (UK) had arrived and investigations have already commenced at the Airport.
The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) confirmed that currently statements were being recorded from them by a special team from the CID.
“We were just recording statements from them, once the procedure is over we will allow them to go soon,” a senior officer of the CID said.
“We are not going to arrest them or detain them. We need to take valuable information that we have to record in our files”, he added
The State Intelligence Service (SIS) is also assisting the CID to record the statements from the deported asylum seekers, the police said.
It is also the second such batch of asylum seekers that was deported back to Sri Lanka by a Western country notably from the United Kingdom. Some of the asylum seekers are suspected for having links with the LTTE. The first such batch comprising 44 persons was deported to the island on June 17.
International Human Rights groups, especially Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have criticised Britain for deporting the asylum seekers who are mainly Tamils saying that they may not be safe on their return.
British authorities have stated that it only undertakes returns to Sri Lanka when it is satisfied that the individual has no protection needs. (Supun Dias) Pix by Deepa-Adikaree

To prevent futher Tamil refugees fleeing from Sri Lanka, the UN should send its peace keeping forces to North and East part of Sri Lanka to protect Tamils from crimes against humanity. Once UN forces are placed, there is no reason for Tamils to leave Sri Lanka.

They are no longer refugees of UK. Treat them humanely and try to obtain information as to how they got to UK. Who provided money, who supported their journey to UK and any supportive links. But treat them like human beings not second class citizens. Good luck!

the sri lankan govt should not accept any SL refugees from any country especially from the west.let them stay in those countries and ask those govts to look after them, when these type comes back they will be a burden on the SL.We should allow these eco refugees to roam in those countries and be a parasite to those societies,as it has proved lot of them are criminals, such as credit card scammers, murders, basically they are the scum of society so let them be looked after by the HRW,AI,MPs who says SL in not a safe country etc

Mangala Thursday, 29 September 2011 09:25 AM
Well, they were used by intl orgs and govs. Why they went there? because Uk and other west gov's providing asylem. Who sent them? the agents, LTTE, freinds, relatives. Most important to keep everyones mind, WEST will use anyone for their agendas and try every dirty way. SL GOV should keep track of those who returned and safe guard them (not because of love to them-but because this is a bate west send here) If something happens to these guys all west and ngos will start to cry.
