President Maithripala Sirisena today requested the trade unions including the railways to resolve their issues in an intelligent and humane manner without causing inconvenience to the innocent people.
Addressing an event held at the Viharamahadevi Park, President Sirisena expressed his regrets over the disruptions faced by students, who were attending the GCE Advanced Level (AL) Examination due to the strike action being carried out by the railway trade unions.
“The inconvenience will be caused to the people and not for the Government through these trade union actions. Peoples’ right should be preserved and the trade unions should look into this matter in a more humane way irrespective of their privileges,” he said.
He also said any party had the ability to discuss their issues with the Government at present unlike during the former Government.

I am not a supporter of Gota. But now I feel he is the better choice to deel with all these TU's. Because they will have to dig their own grave before thinking of stikes.

You're such a Fail President, you don't have the guts to take immediate action like making this essential services and bring forces to run the trains. People can't wait to see your back soon, regret very much for voting for a puppet to become President!!

If the government looked into these matters before the strike the public will not have been inconvenienced like this.Whether it's the trade unions or railway employees who go on strike, it is the sole responsibility of the government to ensure smooth operation goes on.Urging the trade unions not to do so in a public event does not make any sense.
Saradiel Thursday, 09 August 2018 02:16 PM
Trade unions to be human? Very unlikely. If they can just be somewhat reasonable life will be very much easier for all including the unionists.
Anthony Thursday, 09 August 2018 02:24 PM
Hon Mr. President. All these trade Unions should be treated like animals. You gave every one freedom but they have taken mean advantage now and taken kindness for weakness. Did they behave like this during MR period. By this 80 percent of Citizens keep blaming you and the Government and the JO has taken advantage on this and provoking people. Educated people know the sufferings during MR period but no one could have done anything to voice their opinion. Its ok even you have to loose the presidential election and change your style and treat people the way they have to be treated, Shame on our country and people a disgrace to the world.

Mr. President time to be soft on TUs is over. YOu have to be strict with them, take those who violate the laws of the land to courts and punish them. Start with GMOA first.

While roundly condemning the inconveniencing of public especially students by this trade union action aren’t the Government too responsible for reneging on promises given at earlier discussions. Isn’t it not that the Government hierarchy too should show intelligence, human nature and most of all trustworthiness in the follow-up process after discussions and agreements?
Nihal Thursday, 09 August 2018 05:10 PM
Useless speech no use we all were Mislead in 2015 giving us promises Now talks Democracy Now all Democracy looting strike cheating all Democracy?
Nuwan Thursday, 09 August 2018 05:21 PM
A heavy public service the country can't afford is killing the economy. Bring in laws to prohibit any snap trade union action. Make sure that there is a due process before union takes it to the streets. Define each other's responsibilities clearly, if not considered one must face the consequences.
