Colombo, May 6 (Daily Mirror) - Public Security Minister Tiran Alles said today that the Singapore government has agreed to send a five-member team to Sri Lanka to conduct a comprehensive study of the country's airport and immigration systems.

Expressing the need for Sri Lanka's immigration services to evolve, the Minister said he has requested the Singapore government to assess and provide recommendations for enhancing Sri Lanka's airport and immigration systems to match Singapore's standards.

The Singapore government has agreed to send a team to Sri Lanka on May 27, he said.

"The team will assess our systems and submit a detailed report to us," Minister Alles said.

"We all know that Singapore has the best technology compared to Europe. We may not be able to implement those levels into our system immediately due to economic challenges. However, based on the report, we can adapt some technology that we can afford," the Minister told reporters in Colombo.

Someone seems hellbent on having the 'On arrival' visa department outsourced, eh mates?

Daya Satharasinghe Tuesday, 07 May 2024 07:21 AM

After signing an agreement with VSF Global to run Sri Lanka visa operations, now the minister has requested help from Singapore. What a shame minister. If you really wanted to improve the system, why did'nt you ask for help before handing over the operation to BSF Global. This action shows why Sri Lanka is not progressing well. Politicians always react not doing sufficient studies before decisions are taken. Daya

Singapore ideas on how to improve will work in their society, but those theories will fall flat on their faces because of the endemic nepotism, favoritism and other corrupt practices happening throughout our local society.

These are internal problems which must be resolved internally. What effort did they make in this regard was the Controller consulted etc etc before running off to Singapore Singaporeans did not elect this govt Sri Lankans did.

Our level of education. Not capable of even doing a study ourselves. We should study their system. Because it works for them doesn't mean it works for us. Never listen to others do your own analysis.

The situation can be likened to the blind leading the blind, as the minister in question and the rest are turning a blind eye to questionable actions while making feeble attempts to conceal dubious dealings. Despite projecting an image of virtue in public, this minister has allegedly engaged in clandestine transactions with Indian company to implement visa system. Credit is due to the Sri Lankan passenger who bravely brought to light the scandalous visa irregularities. However, it is appalling that the Minister of Public Security shamelessly ordered the arrest of this passenger. Such actions only serve to further expose the Ranil-Rajapakse government's involvement in wrongful activities to the public eye.

This is an excellent way to raise the standard in Sri Lanka's tourism related systems. We must do this for everything else in Sri Lanka. Well done in taking the first step in the right direction.

He is trying so hard to outsource this to a foriegn company. Did you call a tender for this matter as well. He seems to be acting like a dictator without a brain. Next Keheliya. His past is very corrupt. Giving money to ltte, shell companies, getting corrupt bandu as igp, visa scam.

Singaporeans are coming to see how NOT to do things like in Sri Lanka.

    Lilavati Tuesday, 07 May 2024 07:51 AM

Ayoo, ayoo - Sri Lanka has declaired itself as a suburb for India by outsourcing visa process to VFS. Is this one of trade offs to get a ”eased term loans” fron India? Let’s hope that team from Singapore has common sense and are genuine singaporians, not indians living in Singapore or flying via Singapore.

    Sambo Tuesday, 07 May 2024 08:00 AM

Why all this hassle. The current system was been operated for over 12 years with no hassle. Just because some one wanted to earn money the system was changed and a higher visa charges was levied. This is bad for a country that is hungry for tourism.

    Christo255 Tuesday, 07 May 2024 08:24 AM

Shouldn't this have been done in the first place. Bull in the China shop who was mentioned in the panama papers will not be able to manipulate Singaporeans. NPP silent, is it because he's one of their ex parliamentarians and colleagues?

Why are we always quoting bribe and corruption all the time, whatever the cabinet / government tries to do. Frustrating. Pissed off and piss off with such mentality. If anything could be done to revive the economy and put things in better perspective in SL, it is undoubtedly RW's strategy and leadership. Others please support him FOR OUR SAKE. Dont dream of achieving personal goals. You will fail miserably.

    Sudda Tuesday, 07 May 2024 09:35 AM

The Minister says: “ VFS Global is here to stay for at least 12 years”. Isn’t it then a waste to have a Singaporean team here to assess the current system? Somebody is lying here. The ETA system worked well!

    Piyasiri Tuesday, 07 May 2024 10:05 AM

This appears to be a good move, provided honesty and transparency prevails with a genuine intention of achieving effecctive outcome.

Umar Perera Tuesday, 07 May 2024 10:06 AM

BS. You had to cover up for your taxpayer funded jaunt to Singapore so you've pulled this out a the hat now. Besides, our customs and immigration work fine. All they need is more people handling more counters. The system in Singapore uses the highest level of scrutiny and accountability and if you have to "pass through Immigration" in Singapore you are asked to check in at least 1.5 hours earlier because as they say "it takes time". Why are we outsourcing when there is such high unemployment in SL?

Singapore people seen as most honest in world cultures Tuesday, 07 May 2024 10:36 AM

Singapore people are considered most honest in Asia, while ours is another 3rd world country culture. See 'Corruption Perceptions Index' for public thoughts about their own government workers. Singapore does all Visa processing themselves, however Sri Lanka having a high level of deceit in general society can never match how Singapore does things. All the education in the world cannot help a society entrenched with old time religious values, which is a precursor to corruption social activities. Fix up Sri Lanka social attitudes and everything will work out, but since that is impossible only replacing the workers with robots can improve situation.

Replace all staff in airport and immigration with Singapore nationals and things will improve Tuesday, 07 May 2024 10:42 AM

What the report will not say is that trying to change Sri Lankan way of doing things, is like trying to teach a old tired out dog new tricks. Best is for Sri Lanka to outsource whole of airport and immigration to be manned and managed wholly by Singaporeans.

    sam Tuesday, 07 May 2024 11:05 AM

    SL experts are not utilised

No capable people here Tuesday, 07 May 2024 06:53 PM

Why do you think SL has people able to do that work? People who are honest, hardworking and truth speaking. Any Sri Lankans report is bound to be biased or maybe they will be threatened by political goons or business mafia. Have to get independent overseas people to do good work.

Singapore, can you 225 parliamentarians to run this country too! Then whole problems will be solved!! No point of sending Singaporians and investigating the airport as it is controlled by corrupt people!!

    FredSnR Tuesday, 07 May 2024 06:19 PM

All this outsourcing etc is destroying Sri Lankas ability to fend for itself making the country more and more dependent on others for survival. If a Sri Lankan govt was not in charge I would have said it is a strategy to weaken not develop the country. But that is not the case

    Sambo Wednesday, 08 May 2024 08:10 AM

You create the mess and then go for advise. Typical Sri Lankan way of doing things.
