Colombo, May 9 (Daily Mirror) - While denouncing the false rumours regarding imminent vehicle importation, the Vehicle Importers Association of Sri Lanka (VIASL) clarified that no vehicles, including lightweight vehicles, will be imported within the current year or before the election.

VIASL President Prasad Priyanga told the Daily Mirror that this decision was taken following a discussion held with the Finance State Minister yesterday.

"According to the discussion, vehicle importation will take at least another year. However, upon resuming importation, buses and lorries will be the first batch imported, primarily for tourism purposes," Priyanga said.

"Buses and lorries will exclusively be imported through the members of our association, with a maximum import time of one month. The discussion primarily centred around importing electric vehicles, although fuel-powered vehicles will also be included among them," he said.

We also discussed with the state minister on reducing the import tax imposed (18%) on importers when importing vehicles.

However, Finance State Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said that the government is focused on resuming vehicle imports in four stages soon after receiving the report over the potential impact of lifting vehicle import restrictions.

How can you satisfy the greedy political morons? They need brand new vehicles before the elections.

"exclusively be imported through the members of our association" so you make make a monopoly and earn as you wish?

Ensure Only EVs are Imported Later Friday, 10 May 2024 05:01 AM

Great! Ensure once restrictions are removed to only bring in electric vehicles (EV’s). Till it’s approved hopefully around 2026, start planning to arrange to install Electric charges for the vehicles NOW. Once these cars start being rolled out, use of petroleum and diesel will drastically fall. Have a committee to understand the impact it will have on the country by visiting a few countries who have embarked on this journey.

High cost of vehicles will make Sri Lankan exports too expensive for tourists.

Ratnasiri Hadiranpela Friday, 10 May 2024 08:25 AM

It is better not to import private vehicles including already congested and accidents prone 3 wheelers other than public vehicles like busses, transport vehicles etc.

    Seems we have enough !

    NightOwl Friday, 10 May 2024 09:55 AM

VIASL members are panicing over recent advertisnments by KIA and Toyota. they are scared of price crash from astronomical rates to more realistic levels. these guys will keep repeating this untill they reasonably get rid of all the inventories in their car sales. Imports will resume in the recent future and we are due see the same fellows who cried over import ban going to cry asking to ban the imports or give them the exclusive right to import

    udaya Friday, 10 May 2024 10:42 AM

NightOwl is spot on.....these guys are panicking because their stock of highly inflation vehicle will come crashing down. its already happening.

    Putha Friday, 10 May 2024 03:13 PM

Exactly. Margins are so high that even the market rates get slashed by 50% they will make a profit. But what concerns me the most is the exclusivity. When anyone can import vehicles by just paying the federal tax the rates will come down automatically.

Hon. Sarneris Friday, 10 May 2024 12:48 PM

IF they make proper fast public transport systems like in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, etc., very few people will use vehicles.

VEHICLES ARE IMPORTED IN OTHER COUNTRIES BY INDIVIDULA ,WE DONT NEED A VEHICLE ASSOCIATION

melville perera Friday, 10 May 2024 08:42 PM

As seen via print and electronic media over 1000 vehicles or more presumably brand new are exposed to the elements in the two ports and imported by letters of credit as demanded by the suppliers and one wonders why these are not cleared by the importer and all vehicles are paid for upfront. There is a time bar by the customs and demmurage charged if not cleared by the importer within the specified clearance time and auctioned after due notice is given Delayed clearance involves heavy penalties and these vehicles are in the port for over three/four years It is a waste of unproductive port space and the state should intervene to force the importer to return the vehicles and ask for refund of the foreign exchange involved with interest. With this large stock of brand new vehicles lying idle in the port it looks absolutely stupid for the VIA to ask for further imports The question is why are vehicles in the port for such long time exposed to the weather and losing its value
