The National People's Power (NPP) yesterday accepted the official invitation for the political debate to be held by the Daily Mirror and Lankadeepa, with the three main presidential candidates while the Samagi Jana Balawegaya leader Sajith Premadasa is yet to confirm his participation.

The Daily Mirror invitation was accepted by NPP General Secretary Tilvin Silva, who said that NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake is ready for the debate and will attend.

The Daily Mirror handed over the official invitation to the Opposition leader's office in Colombo and the team is still to receive his confirmation of participation. However by last evening, Premadasa’s office confirmed that Sajith Premadasa had received the invitation letter and had directed it to MP Nalin Bandara who is handling the affairs regarding the debates.

The official invitation to President Ranil Wickremesinghe will be handed over soon.

The Daily Mirror and Lankadeepa extended an invitation on April 8 to the three main Presidential candidates - Ranil Wickremesinghe, Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Sajith Premadasa for a LIVE political debate on their economic and political policies and their pledges in moving the country forward if they win the upcoming Presidential election scheduled to be held in October.

The interview will be aired LIVE on the Daily Mirror, Lankadeepa, and Tamil Mirror and Sunday Times digital platforms.

A date and time to host the debate will be announced in the due course once all three candidates accepted the invitations.

It is good to debate the prevailing issues particularly how to revive the national economy. But please remember if need arises after the elections, these two parties should work together to defeat the common enemy, Ranil Rajapaksa.

This is stupid thinking as UNP, SJB have the same outlook

Panini Edirisinhe Sunday, 12 May 2024 09:19 AM

AKD will make an excellent President. Ranil has no place. Since SJB has the same policies as the UNP, they will be an effective OPPOSITION, with the possibility that they can take over in 2019, should the NPP stumble. I don't see them stumbling, but the POSSIBILITY of replacing them ought to be maintained!

Sajith is taking vallium by the hand full to calm his nerves.

Jagath Ekanayake Tuesday, 30 April 2024 08:10 AM

Sajith should delete Hirunika to take his place. It will be fun when she scream “Ranil” “Ranil” when things get hot.

Nimal Perera Tuesday, 30 April 2024 10:44 AM

Sajith is no match for Anura - waste of time

    Ama Tuesday, 30 April 2024 12:40 PM

No.. Hon Sajith can resurrect the fallen ECONOMY... Did you ever see Sajith's debate in Parliament ?

Dr Saman Tuesday, 30 April 2024 02:44 PM

@Ama SJB is better off as long as Sajith keeps his mouth shut!

Dr Saman Tuesday, 30 April 2024 10:55 AM

A leader can't lead by hiding. Sajith is a joke.

He is looking for the words to use that is not in the dictionary.

    Appuhamy Tuesday, 30 April 2024 10:59 AM

Either way, Ranil will be an ultimate winner by throwing a pompous and adolescent SP into the fire. Expect the exodus of many from the SJB back to the UNP!

    Shyama Tuesday, 30 April 2024 11:09 AM

But that will be too late and too little for Ranil.

    Kamal Tuesday, 30 April 2024 08:45 PM

The debate of all candidates not ones who could not even get electedike Ranil but selected by the Rajapakse' family should get their chance and debate when the presidential election is announc d and th candidates are named not before. As of now Ranil the public dejected rajapaks family selected cannot b invited for a debate

Debates can be about past conduct

Premadasa should step down in favour of Fonseka, because in terms of state policy he is the best for the country and superior to both remaining candidates!!! After all, it is not just about economic policy and tax policy, for which Fonseka can put together the best economic experts, but also about domestic and foreign policy, among other things, and the representation of Sri Lanka in the global game of power!!! There is no better president than Fonseka, who has already proven his brilliance and is also superior to both Ranil and Anura Kumara in terms of political strategic thinking!!!

THE WORLD SHOULD BE INFORMED OF DATE AND TIME TO LOG IN AND LISTEN. Tuesday, 30 April 2024 02:31 PM

ANURA AND SAJITH SHOULD FORGET DIFFERENCES AND UNIT TOGETHER AND OPEN THE DOORS FOR OTHER PARTIES TO JOIN THEM IN THEIR QUEST TO FORM A UNITED NEW GOVERNMENT. AT THE DEBATE ANURA REPRESENTS HIS ALLIANCE AGAINST RANIL, WITH THE ENTIRE DEBATE IN SINHALA AND ENGLISH FOR THE WORLD TO WATCH. THE DEBATE DATE AND TIME TO BE SPREAD ACROSS ALL SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS, SO VIEWERS HAVE A CHANCE TO ASK QUESTIONS TOO.

NPP is nowhere right now, will be a talkative party if Sajith, holding a recognized party, agrees to have a debate with NPP. No one will vote NPP, once considered an extremist group committed genocide in the Sri Lanka's pollitical history.

Debate from any party but implement under UNP Tuesday, 30 April 2024 05:00 PM

We the Lankans saw eminent socialist leaders and noisy debaters in NM. Perera, Colvin,WD.de Silva, Vivien etc.in the past. We cheered and voted them to power only to see them die as failures. So was Phillip Gunawardhane, a man with lofty principles but failed. Finally he succeeded, implementing his dreams only when he joined Dudley,

WHAT ABOUT THE GENOCIDE THAT WAS COMMITTED DURING MR'S RULING WHILE OVERSEAS WHERE INNOCENT TAMILS AND OTHERS WERE SLAUGHTERED LIKE CATTLE!!!

    Nimal R Tuesday, 30 April 2024 07:01 PM

I think you are in a dream world. This type of dreaming will not help anyone and you should try to live with the reality. NPP and SJB both are equally strong and an open debate will allow people to decide who to choose.

People and Situations Change Tuesday, 30 April 2024 07:20 PM

The word is “once considered” an extremist group. Japan too was the enemy of many countries once an upon a time. Look at them now, so industrious and offering their expertise to so many countries including SL. People and situations change and NPP is getting there. Just waiting for the manifesto to assure their potential voters of their agenda. If they can’t produce it, will be a challenging situation for them to convince everyone.

    Jayantha Tuesday, 30 April 2024 04:41 PM

What a waste to debate with npp jokers. They do not have any idea about running a country as non of the jvp seniors have done a job or a business for an income. Even 54 years old harini is not married yet and how come she have anyidea about family expenses. Also if you listen to most of these guys you can see that they lies a lot.

    Nimal R Tuesday, 30 April 2024 06:15 PM

If Sajith evades the debate this time too giving various excuses, it will end his political career. Damn shame.

    Mama's boy Tuesday, 30 April 2024 07:12 PM

Sajith is an immature child trapped in a matured body. No match for AKD

A debate with Anura and Ranil could be an interesting one. Definitely not a dumb person like Sajith who is showcasing a typical fake compassion about the public.

    sam Wednesday, 01 May 2024 06:33 AM

Before the debate all parties should publish their policy documents to the public.
