Government planning four-stage vehicle import resumption

Following discussions with vehicle importers, the government is focused on resuming vehicle imports in four stages, Finance State Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said.

After the meeting, the State Minister claimed that vehicle importers are expected to deliver a report soon on the potential impact of lifting vehicle import restrictions.

He said the report will include detailed information on the relaxation of import restrictions.

Minister Siyambalapitiya pointed out the importance of the report prepared by experts in the vehicle import sector, highlighting its significant role in the decision-making process for the resumption of vehicle imports.

During the discussion, vehicle importers suggested to the Finance State Minister that it would be more feasible to import vehicles under different categories instead of allowing all imports at once. They proposed categorizing vehicle imports for public transport, used vehicles and private vehicles.

Furthermore, various issues regarding problematic situations arising from tax payments were also discussed during the meeting.

No more vehicle imports till at least 2025 please. Stabilise the economy first. We can't take unnecessary risks. There are so many scams involved in vehicle imports. It happened even recently with the import of electric cars for foreign earners.

Vehicle import licenses must be abolished. Every private individual or company must have the right to import vehicles. This would break a monopoly that is damaging to the economy. Even if most buyers would not import their vehicle themselves, import prices and thus vehicle prices would fall.

Don't import any second hand vehicles, for safeties sake let inject some new vehicles on the roads. Most currently being used are unsafe as they are too old and not maintained. New vehicle only, one type of small car, one type of medium car and one type of larger car. That's all we need. STOP importing vehicle at present. Find ways to treat the starvation, hunger, malnutrition in the island wide provinces. Next is plan and implement a system to oust old vehicle from the road that pollute the air quality island wide, finally control the transport ,traffic and driving discipline including speeding in order to prevent accident and deaths on roads.......Until the country is stable do not even think of allowing importing vehicles....
