Colombo, April 2 (Daily Mirror) - Due to a series of programms to be held for the State Vesak festival for Sri Buddha year 2568 (2024), the Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Ministry requested to stop the slaughter of animals and to close down meat shops and places where drugs are sold, including liquor stores, on May 22, 23 and 24.

Meanwhile, Cabinet spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardana said the State Vesak festival is scheduled to be held from May 21 to 27, naming it Vesak week and focusing on the Matale district.

The theme of this year's State Vesak festival is "Let's not look at what others have done and look at what we have done."

The opening ceremony of the festival is scheduled to be held at the premises of the Dharmaraja Pirivena in Matale and the closing ceremony at the Millawana Sri Sunandarama Temple premises in the Pallepola Divisional Secretariat.

Eventhough liquor shops closed for vesak, people stock liquor prior to closure of liquor shops, my personal view is that closing liquor shops is not a wise move, keep liquor shops open on all festive days but close meat shops only, closing liquor shops, will boost illicit liquor sales.

Did Lord Buddha say to close those liquorshop and Meatshops only for Vesak and Poya days? Learn to respect Lord Buddha honestly.

A country gone mad governed by religious fanatics, only to show off. If so, why is the country full of corrupt people and murderers? Is being corrupt a sin? Having a beer for enjoyment is not a sin. Then why are those liquor shops open in other days? Is it not a sin to drink on other days? What a joke!. Btw, what about promoting tourism? HAs anyone of you being to Thailand and seen how they do it?

    kumar Wednesday, 03 April 2024 06:23 AM

What sort of nonsense is this? Why don't you engage religious police to check if someone is consuming alcohol and meat and who refrain visiting Pansals on these days. And close all entertainment venues, movie theaters, shopping malls, tourist attractions, etc.? That kind of fanaticism.

Liquor shops will be closed but Ruling party members storerooms are filled with Arrack. I saw how Aluthgamage transported Arrack to his residence and unloaded at Dolosbage.

Give notice to the public well in advance so that they can stock their liquor!
