During the traditional oil anointing ritual after the Sinhala and Tamil New Year dawn, a blessing is recited that invokes a series of seemingly impossible transformations to grant longevity to the anointed.

What absurd charlatanism. Longevity can only be achieved through a healthy lifestyle, healthy food and living in an area that is not polluted. Genes can also play a role. However, putting leaves on your head and feet and letting herbal oils drip onto your skull definitely doesn't help. And for this bizarre ritual, the economy lost a working day.

King Charles during his coronation, in front of world leaders and millions watching in television, underwent the oil anointing ritual where “ mystical “ oil was massaged into his body and head behind a screen erected around him. The British royals copied long time ago many of our ancient Hindu and Buddhist traditions. But British people never mocked their king for his copied oil ritual. However they have a ludicrous tendency to mock us when we practice this as part of our own religious tradition.

Just because King did it we should be doing it too? Who knows what oil he used. It might be a good massage oil. These ludicrous practices won't get anyone anywhere. Only prosperity people can get is via hard work and focussing on right things. These useless things only bring more fake beliefs and more holidays for already lazy Sri Lankans.

What a waste of time. Has all this anointing brought any prosperity? Only Hullang!

I was watching a tik tok on a US 107 year old still working barber, I don’t think that he was ever anointed with anything expect possibly at his baptism with plain water. In a way it is good to have these beliefs, it creates a market for oil and divul leaves

"Grant longevity to anointed". LMAO. These people still living in dark ages. This doesn't bring anything other than another holiday to add to 300 days of holidays SL already has in a year. Stupidity on display in a bankrupt country. After applying oil, go straight back to stealing and corrupt activities.

The super-smart Socrates, who will surely give another clever answer, has never heard of the placebo effect!!! "Faith" really does sometimes move mountains and help people! What can be said against that? Even if the process described is only of a cultural or (religious) nature, it is justified! From an evolutionary biological perspective, the whole thing can be attributed to human magical thinking! Perhaps the clever Socrates is also sometimes subject to this way of thinking!?

Date of departure is all predestined and life goes on like a video tape. No amount of healthy food, happiness, stress free life can guarantee long life. It is a conjunction of planets that causes death. This is why even JRJ who ate organic vegetables from his private garden got finally stomach cancer.

When I was a child, my parents followed all these avurudu rituals to the letter and they never prospered. So I hate to burst anyone's bubble but I can confirm that these don't work. Better to put this same effort into doing an actual job or getting an education.
