Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra said land connectivity between India and Sri Lanka was proposed by Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The President came up with the same proposal for the construction of a bridge between the two countries when he was the Prime Minister between 2002 and 2004.
Making his remarks at a press conference in New Delhi, the Indian Foreign Secretary said that in terms of connectivity projects, the idea was proposed by the Sri Lankan President.
“Both leaders agreed to take this forward and in taking this forward you would have heard Prime Minister in his Press Remarks say that both sides would carry it forward through an initial feasibility study to look at this land connectivity between the two countries which would of course help to bring about economic prosperity to both our societies, also help in regional cohesion with the two countries, and can be a source of tremendous bilateral and the regional economic prosperity in our region,” he said.
The two countries signed five agreements namely the join joint declaration of intent (JDI) in the field of animal husbandry and dairying, MoU on cooperation in the field of renewable energy, Memorandum of Cooperation for economic development projects in Trincomalee District of Sri Lanka and Network to network agreement between NIPL and Lanka Pay for UPI application acceptance in Sri Lanka and Energy Permit for Sampur Solar Power Project. If the bridge is built, there would be Indian encroachment into Sri Lanka in all aspects. Dirt cheap Indian labor which would also affect the employment opportunities for locals, Indian products (mostly the garbage) will flood Sri Lanka. And also the scamming would increase.

A proposal with such important ramifications should be put to the people.And Trincomalee is such a valuable asset, the second best natural harbour in the world, it is a sanctuary for whales in the vicinity, it could be an energy source something which Arthur Clarke pointed out possibly a parking ground for submarines? The area has historical significance and it is just a beautiful place waiting to be developed it is prize real estate .Iam sure the Indians have thought about all this the question is have the Sri Lankans Once gone it would be gone for ever can't sign agreements today and abrogate them tomorrow.There is so much cooperation that is possible with the Indians without handing over the family silver.Even the famous David Attenborough raved over it in his youth.Sri Lanka and Sri Lankans deserve better

Its more of sri lanka's need than India's need. No one is eager to come and work or live there from India (probably in 90s not in in the current decade). Its a leisure island for visit. Tamil Nadu's GDP is at least 35 Billion dollars more than Srilanka. Sri lanka can't give jobs. Its one more market for India as SL doesn't manufacture.

It is sad to see the mentality exhibited by fear of connectivity with India. Where were these people when Sri Lanka was begging for food, oil and medicine not long ago. Who did the heavy lifting at that time? Unfortunately we as a race forget that our DNA came from India- NO Doubt. BUT we are quite happy to go to bed with China than India. Take a good look at world history of 20th Century. The countries that went on to conquer other lands recently were the so called communist block- China and Russia. India never was there. But the Sinhala Buddhist mentality allows us to suspect the wrong country because of the History some 1000AD. Ultimately the greater benefit from connectivity is to Sri Lanka than India.
