Champion Richmond cricket team
By M. Shamil Amit
Richmond College Galle emerged champions of the Under 19 inter-school Division One Tier ‘A’ two day cricket tournament by recording an easy first innings win over defending joint champions Trinity in the final concluded at the SSC ground yesterday.
The Richmondites in fact achieved the win at the end of the second day’s play when they posted a formidable score of 304 in reply to the hill capital school’s score of 203 made on day one.
The hero of Richmond’s win was their opener Nikil Jayaweera who cracked a match winning knock of 139 and was supported by Shehan de Zoysa, Seneth Sisan and Chehan Subasinghe who contributed to the win with useful knocks.
An outright win for either side was never going to happen and the final day’s play was of an academic interest as Trinity resuming their second innings from their overnight score of 38 for 1 went on to make 254 for 9 declared with Supun Waduge and Tharana Wimaladharma making half tons.
Richmond in the process are winning the two day title after a lapse of ten years with the last being in the year 2014.
Scores:
Trinity 203 and (38/1 overnight) 254 for 9 declared (Supun Waduge 96, Tharana Wimaladharma 57, Manula Kularatne 23, Dinusha Peiris 20: Yuri Koththigoda 2/31, Kaveesha Induwara 2/49, Sihath Ramanayake 2/66, Sharon Abishek 2/68)
Richmond 304 and 36 for 1 at close.
