Cape Verde, home to roughly 600,000 people, is a collection of 10 volcanic islands in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Africa. Nicknamed the “Blue Sharks,” the Cape Verde football team entered the tournament ranked 67th in the world and took the 2026 FIFA World Cup by storm, delivering a series of remarkable performances that propelled the nation into the knockout stages in its very first appearance.

Sending shockwaves throughout the footballing world, Cape Verde led by their 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha and 36-year-old captain Ryan Mendes navigated the incredibly difficult Group H without losing a single game, advancing to the Round of 32 as the group’s runners-up.

In their very first World Cup match, they caused a monumental upset by holding European champions Spain to a goalless draw. In the process, Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha (real name Josimar Dias) became an overnight sensation after making seven crucial saves to earn his nation its first-ever World Cup point.

Proving that their opening draw against Spain was no fluke, Cape Verde then went toe-to-toe with another former world champion, holding Uruguay to a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Miami Stadium in the United States. Kevin Pina etched his name into football history by scoring Cape Verde’s first-ever World Cup goal in the 21st minute before Hélio Varela found the equaliser in the 61st minute to secure another memorable result.

Continuing their incredible run, Cape Verde held Saudi Arabia to another goalless draw, becoming the smallest nation in football history to reach the World Cup knockout stage.

Then, in the Round of 32 Cape Verde pushed reigning world champions Argentina to the absolute limit. Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the 29th minute before Deroy Duarte equalised in the 59th minute. Lisandro Martínez restored Argentina’s lead early in extra time in the 92nd minute, but what followed in the 103rd minute was a stunning contender for Goal of the Tournament as Sidny Lopes Cabral brilliantly levelled the match at 2-2. Cape Verde’s fairy tale ultimately came to a heartbreaking end when an unfortunate own goal by Diney Borges—after a Cristian Romero header deflected off him—found the net in the 111th minute to seal a dramatic 3-2 victory for Argentina.

Despite the defeat, Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha once again made international headlines after producing 10 saves during the intense 120-minute battle, spectacularly denying Lionel Messi on five occasions to keep the Blue Sharks in the contest.

Moreover, by the end of their fairy-tale run, the 40-year old shot-stopper officially became the most-followed goalkeeper in the world on Instagram, surpassing legendary names such as Iker Casillas, Keylor Navas and Emiliano Martínez.

Before the World Cup, he had just 46,000 followers. Following Cape Verde’s heroic performance against Argentina, that number skyrocketed to approximately 26 million, highlighting the immense global impact of his performances.

On July 5, Cape Verde’s Independence Day, the Blue Sharks and their charismatic coach Bubista received a heroes’ welcome in the nation’s capital, Praia. Travelling through the city aboard an open-top bus, the team was greeted by thousands of jubilant supporters, while banners reading Obrigado! Cabo Verde (Thank You! Cabo Verde) filled the streets in celebration of the nation’s historic achievement.

Cape Verde may not have lifted the World Cup trophy, but they won something equally special—the hearts of millions around the world, proving that sometimes you don’t have to win the tournament to become one of its greatest champions.
