World Cup shocker Little giant Ecuador subdues ex-champ Germany

The small South American country of Ecuador is associated with the Amazon rainforest, the Andean mountains and the nation that is closest to the Galápagos Islands where new forms life is said to have emerged many centuries ago.

But on Thursday another phenomenon took place when Ecuador stunned World Cup followers as they tamed mighty Germany 2-1 in New Jersey, USA.

With that Ecuador left behind many nations with better football reputations and reached the World Cup knockout stage of 32.

From the looks of it Ecuador may have booked a date with England in the 32-team knockout stage and the match is expected to be a sellout with many now curious to know more about the giant killers.

Ecuador’s rise could be the stuff of legends and fairytales just a few days after they failed to score a single goal in their first two games, a draw with Curacao and defeat at the hands of Ivory Coast.

But Ecuador showed the pundits they were not at the World Cup merely making up the numbers something that England may have to take note of.

Going into the match, Germany had already topped their Group and within the first three minutes they meant business as they beat the Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez to score the first goal that many thought indicated a foregone conclusion to the result.

But Ecuador hit back within the next ten minutes to draw level when Nilson Angulo found the back of the net.

With the scores level on 1-1 and the clocking ticking towards the final whistle, the best for Ecuador and the worst for Germany occurred.

Ecuador’s Gonzalo Plata slammed the ball into the net beating the goalkeeper all ends up sending their fans into a wild cheers and celebrations at the venue and outside. Millions back at home were over-the-moon that Ecuador had not only made its mark at a World Cup but also humiliated Germany that won the World Cup more than once.

Ecuador left Germany with many questions to answer. Perhaps a huge wake-up call like never before going into the last 32 teams in the fray.

Having now made the World Cup more interesting, Ecuador will be nudging the critics and creating more followers of the beautiful game.
