A 52-ball knock of 55, inclusive of five balls by Dahami Senethma, laid the foundation for Sri Lanka Women’s Under-19 to record a massive 139-run win over host Malaysia Women’s Under-19 in their first match of the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup played at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, yesterday.
Sri Lanka Women’s U-19, invited to take first lease of the wicket, was given a sound start of 40 runs by openers Sanjana Kavindi, who hit 30 in 13 balls, and Sumudu Nisansala.
This was followed with Dahami taking over and sharing two valuable partnerships: that of 40 runs for the third wicket with skipper Manudi Nanayakkara and 51 runs for the fourth wicket with Hiruni Hansika for them to end with a formidable score of 162/6. Malaysia Women’s U-19 in their turn, found the Sri Lankan bowlers too hot to handle as they lost their top five wickets with just 14 runs on board, with Chamodi Praboda doing the early damage.

They never recovered from there as they succumbed to bowling pair Manudi and Limansa Tilekeratne, who together shared four wickets as they lost the remaining five wickets for the addition of just nine runs, being bundled out for a paltry 23 runs. Dahami was adjudged the player of the match. Sri Lanka Women’s U-19 will play their second match against the West Indies Women’s U-19.
India Women’s U-19 too coasted to an easy nine-wicket win over the West Indies U-19 in another match played at the same venue. West Indies Women’s U-19, taking first lease of the wicket, was bowled out for a meagre 44 runs, and India Women’s U-19, in their run chase, was guided by an unbroken 43 runs for the second by Sanika Chalke and G. Kamilini, which helped to race to the target with ease in the fifth over.
