Police reject Gammanpila’s claims over Suresh Sallay’s treatment in CID custody

Colombo, June 06 (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Police have dismissed recent public statements made by former Member of Parliament Udaya Gammanpila concerning former State Intelligence Service (SIS) Director and retired Major General Suresh Sallay.

Former MP Gammanpila today alleged that Suresh Sallay has commenced a hunger strike while in police custody, claiming he is being subjected to inhumane treatment.

Salle is currently being held under detention orders by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on suspicion of involvement in the Easter Sunday attacks.

The Police strongly denied allegations that the suspect was subjected to assault or inhumane treatment while in custody. Police said that the CID is treating the former intelligence chief in accordance with standard legal procedures applicable to any ordinary suspect, explicitly noting that he has been given neither special privileges nor subjected to any form of discrimination or neglect.

Furthermore, the police said that because these matters are already subject to ongoing judicial proceedings, any external commentary must be handled with strict restraint. The Police cautioned that releasing unverified or sensationalized statements to the media regarding an active court case is highly inappropriate.
