Following the recent success of the boys’ teams, Gateway Girls proved they were equal to the task as the Under 14 Girls emerged Champions of the Sri Lanka Schools Colombo District Under 14 Football Tournament, remaining unbeaten throughout the competition.
Competing against nine teams from across the country, Gateway opened their campaign in commanding style with convincing group-stage victories over Vishaka Vidyalaya (3–0) and Mahinda Rajapaksa College (2–0), topping their group with authority. The momentum continued into the knockout stages, where they overcame Maduluwave Sobitha Himi Vidyalaya (1–0) and Stafford International School (2–0), securing qualification for the prestigious All Island stage. A standout performer throughout the tournament was Kanishka Sanjais, whose clinical finishing proved decisive—scoring three goals in the opening match, two in the second, and one goal each in the third and fourth encounters. Kuendi Orla added to the team’s success with a crucial goal in the final. At the back, goalkeeper Griyada Hapukotuwa delivered assured and composed performances, producing clean sheets and providing a solid foundation for the team.
The midfield trio of Brianna Perera, Senuli Millawana, and Snehi Liyanage dictated the pace of play with confidence and control, while defenders Nuvini Karunarathne, Onaya Senanayake, and Vivienne Kurukularathne displayed resilience, discipline, and excellent tactical awareness throughout the tournament.
Strong leadership was central to this achievement, with Captain Nuvini Karunarathne leading from the front and Vice Captain Brianna Perera offering invaluable support through her versatility, teamwork, and composure. This championship triumph not only reflects the talent, dedication, and teamwork of the players but also underscores the strength of Gateway College Colombo’s holistic sports programme. As the team progresses to the All Island stage, Gateway proudly celebrates this milestone, confident that the girls have matched—and admirably complemented—the success of their male counterparts.
