Practical Uniforms for female Bus Drivers and Conductors are a necessity.  The recent announcement by the minister about introducing an air hostess-style uniform for female bus (Daily Mirror Sept.22) drivers and conductors has sparked a debate. Air hostesses work in a posh clean environment serving  a limited set of  posh customers,  not travelling in dirty buses amidst road dust rain and sun.
While the idea of a standardised uniform is commendable, the practicality of such Saree attire as it’s the case with airhostesses in Air Lanka for these road transport is questionable.
Bus drivers and  conductors work in a dynamic,  harsh environment that requires mobility, flexibility, and practicality. Their uniforms should reflect these demands, prioritising comfort, safety, and ease of movement.
Trousers and Shirts are a more suitable option. Given the physical nature of their jobs, trousers and shirts might be a more practical choice for female bus drivers and conductors. This attire would allow for greater freedom of movement and comfort while performing their duties.
Prioritising Functionality -- When designing uniforms for bus drivers and conductors, it’s essential to prioritise functionality and practicality. The uniform should be designed to facilitate their work, ensuring they can perform their duties efficiently and safely.
A balanced approach -- Ultimately - the uniform should strike a balance between professionalism, comfort, and practicality. By considering the specific needs and demands of the job, we can create a uniform that is both functional and respectful.
The uniform of London Transport female bus driver cum conductors should give an idea how to approach this subject.
