FLSP urge govt. to scrap defence MoU with U.S., calls it a fatal mistake by NPP

The Frontline Socialist Party (FLSP) urged the government yesterday to disclose the Memorandum of Understanding on Security Cooperation signed with the United States and scrap it forthwith, considering the opposition that has been built up in the world regarding such agreements.
Issuing a statement, the FLSP central committee said the United States initiated the State Partnership Programme (SPP) in 1993 to maintain its global military dominance following the collapse of the Soviet bloc.
The party said there has been widespread opposition building up around the world against it since then. It said the aim of such agreements is to utilise the geo-locations, ocean, ports, and land facilities of other countries for the military interests of the United States of America.
The party said, “In the current situation, where world politics has shifted from a unipolar to a multipolar landscape, the decision of the NPP (Jathika Jana Balavegaya) Government of Sri Lanka to hastily enter into such an aggressive agreement would be a grave political mistake. The government is deciding to tie Sri Lanka to the hostile military operations of the United States of America at a time when the imperialists, led by the United States, are engaging in bloody wars in Eastern Europe, led by Ukraine, and in the Middle East region, together with Israel, through NATO. It also comes at a time when the Trump administration is threatening open war against Venezuela and is working to bathe the Latin American region in blood. More importantly, the signing of this agreement coincides with the United States’ efforts to escalate its provocative actions against China in the South China Sea to the Indian Ocean, under its “Indo-Pacific” strategy.
Due to this global political situation, an imperialist war is more likely to create an irreversible nuclear catastrophe, and it is no secret that the United States and its rival states with which the government is entering into security cooperation are almost all atomic powers. This poses a significant threat to people’s security. There is a serious question not only regarding this agreement but also about the entire functioning of the current government in the field of foreign relations and policies. The way it interpreted its mediation when there was a war tension between India and Pakistan, and the way its observation about the Gaza massacre, are just two examples of this. The current government has rejected Sri Lanka’s generally accepted non-aligned foreign policy. Sri Lanka is being trapped in a geopolitical failure through such agreements, just as it is being trapped in an economic noose through the IMF agreement and the very unfavourable debt restructuring programme.”
