A she-elephant and a calf that roamed into a cultivated land at Jothiamuna in Maligawila on Saturday night (13) had been electrocuted when they trampled a live wire placed by the owner to protect his crops.
He had cultivated banana, papaw, paddy, coconut and sugarcane on his land. Wildlife officials said the well grown she elephant was about 20 years of age and the calf one year. During investigations, the police arrested the watcher of the land while the owner had fled the area.
Police and the wildlife officers are conducting investigations to arrest the absconding suspect. Veterinary Surgeon in the Lunugamvehera wildlife zone was to visit the scene and hold the postmortem.
Monaragala Wildlife Ranger B. P. Harsha Ruwan is conducting further investigations with the help of the Okkampitiya Police.
