Jaffna Police has initiated inquiries into the election expenses of nine northern politicians including the controversial Jaffna District MP Ramanathan Archchuna, who contested in the 2024 parliamentary election.
The investigation has commenced based on a complaint received by the Election Commission of Sri Lanka, amidst the said contestants having submitted their election expenditure details to the ECSL.
The contestants who are being probed by the police other than Parliamentarian Archchuna are Sasikala Raviraj, A. Umakaran Rasaiah, S. Mayuran, T. Krishnananth, N. Kowshalya and Kuruswami Suren.
The police have so far recorded statements from Sasikala Raviraj and a full report will be submitted to the Election Commission once the statements from others were recorded.
Further, the Jaffna Police will investigate 35 other northern poll candidates for failing to submit their election expenditure details to the ECSL thus far.
