Dr. Ganeshan Wignaraja, Visiting Senior Fellow at ODI Global and a leading Sri Lankan economist, will deliver a public lecture titled Sri Lanka’s Debt Crisis and Recovery at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), University of Sussex, on 30 October 2025. The hybrid event will analyse the causes of Sri Lanka’s economic crisis, the drivers of recovery, the benefits of closer trade with India, and lessons for other developing nations. Dr. Wignaraja draws on his extensive research, including Sri Lanka: Debt Default to Transformative Growth (ODI Global, 2025) and Sovereign Debt Default and Economic Crisis in Sri Lanka (NUS, 2024).
The lecture will feature discussants Professor Raphie Kaplinsky (IDS Emeritus Fellow) and Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy (former Central Bank Governor of Sri Lanka), and will be chaired by Dr. Amrita Saha (IDS). The event takes place in Room 100, IDS Building, with accessibility support via lift to the first floor. Attendance is free and open to the public.
