Namal questions ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ programme amid rising dengue cases

Colombo, June 23 (Daily Mirror) - Opposition MP  has questioned the effectiveness of the Government’s “Clean Sri Lanka” programme, citing the recent surge in dengue cases across the country.

In a statement, Namal said the Government came to power promising a cleaner, healthier and more efficient Sri Lanka through the widely publicised initiative, but the country is now facing one of the highest dengue outbreaks in recent years.

“If ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ is delivering results, the public has every right to ask why dengue cases continue to rise at such an alarming rate,” he said, adding that a programme of this scale should be judged by its outcomes rather than slogans, branding campaigns or publicity events.

Namal sais that the Government holds power at all levels, including Parliament and local councils, and therefore bears responsibility for addressing the issue.

“The people did not grant this mandate for excuses or blame-shifting. They expected solutions, accountability and action,” he said.

He further said that at a time when families are concerned about the spread of dengue and the risks posed to children and communities, the Government should focus on delivering tangible results.

Namal called on the authorities to explain what measures have been taken to control dengue, how resources have been utilised and why the country continues to face a serious dengue challenge despite the implementation of the “Clean Sri Lanka” programme.

“The people placed their trust in this Government to govern. They now deserve answers, accountability and meaningful action,” he said.
