‘World Diabetes Day Bicycle Ride’ on November 13

An Active lifestyle can prevent the occurrence of diabetes

 

 

The following is a press release issued by ‘Rotary’ to mark World Diabetes Day which falls on November 14 
To commemorate World Diabetes Day on 14thNov, a “Bicycle Ride” is scheduled on 13th November starting from Independence Square Colombo. A roller skating ride is also scheduled for the same day. 


Rotary Club of Sri Jayewardenepura together with Rotary Clubs of Colombo Fort, Ampara, Ride for Life Sri Lanka, Sports Medicine Institute, Rotaract Club of Singer Sri Lanka, Rotaract Club of CINEC Campus, Lanka Hospitals, and e-channeling organised these events to create awareness of the importance of regular exercise and healthy diet. 


Along with the cycle ride, a health check-up is also scheduled for the riders and for the general public free of charge. The check-up will be held at Independence Square by Lanka Hospitals.


Diabetes is a condition resulting from high blood sugar levels. All over the world, over 422 million people are suffering from diabetes. Diabetes not just causes an increase in blood sugar, but results in disastrous effects on the vital organs of the body causing debilitation and early death. Kidneys, eyes, lower limbs even the heart and liver are affected by diabetes. In Sri Lanka, over 10 percent of the population suffer from diabetes and in an urban setting, this goes up to 25%. If untreated or uncontrolled diabetes might end in kidney failure, blindness, 
And the amputation of toes or legs. Proper control of diabetes is vital to prevent its complications. 


An Active lifestyle can prevent the occurrence of diabetes or can control the existing disease. Cycling is a proven way of exercising to prevent diabetes or to control its complications. Commuting by bicycle to work and other needs can minimise the chance of acquiring diabetes. Please join us in this event to raise awareness of diabetes among the public.
