Brush strokes that show a connection with the environment

Artist Dr. Ranjith Dharmathilake, a Senior Lecturer at the Dept. of Visual Communication Design, Faculty of Visual Arts, University of the Visual and Performing Arts, has made elaborate plans to conduct his eighth solo art exhibition at the JDA Perera Gallery, Faculty of Visual Arts in Colombo from December 2 to 4. 
One of the key features of his paintings is that they will emphasize his connection with the environment. His art will touch on what visible and what’s not and what can be termed as mystery about the environment. 

He states that the unique feature of abstract expressionism is the harmonic combination of colours and use of dynamic shapes of the paint brush. “Whilst the artist uses his freedom in an inherent manner, the speed and dominance on the canvas is also considered extremely important. The use of live subjects in nature through our emotions exhibits another level of beauty. Nature always seems aesthetic due to this diversity. It will be surprising that we always tend to see the images and the shapes in nature rather than seeing the nature through these images and shapes. In this practical experiment, I attempted to capture the expression of nature through colours and dynamic shapes of brush strokes based on my inner emotions,” says Dr. Dharmathilake.

He uses dark colours to understand the mysteriousness and the quietness in nature. According to him, sometimes, this creative process requires a great effort, but in other times what’s implemented on canvas is done with ease.
He maintains that the way in which humans love nature is different. “The human relationship with the nature is lustful where one seeks to make it one’s own. This is purely a mundane connection. Furthermore, the reality and studying various aspects of nature will take us to a different spiritual dimension. The physical recognition and physical link are essential facts in communication that cause the existence of society as well as nature. Thus, the link and the interaction with nature in  communication is required for the existence and the progression of society.

“Induction of a natural force to the paper or the canvas as well to the shapes and the colours are highly special phenomena in this context. Although in abstract communication this has to be implemented thoughtfully or emotionally, positioning of the shapes of brush strokes and the use of the colours requires continuous exercise and skill,” he says.
