President visits Kandy...

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake visited the temporary shelter at Sri Sudarshanaramaya Temple in Welgala, Poojapitiya, Kandy, this afternoon (01), to assess the welfare of families displaced by the recent landslide in the Ankumbura and Gankotuwa areas and to review ongoing resettlement efforts.

The landslide, triggered by adverse weather, completely destroyed six houses and partially damaged 15 others. Additionally, residents of 30 houses located in high-risk zones were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

A temporary shelter was established at the Sri Sudarshanaramaya Temple on November 28, initially accommodating 189 individuals from 47 families. Currently, around 23 individuals from seven families remain at the shelter.

During his visit, the President engaged with affected residents, inquiring about their conditions and needs. He also reviewed ongoing relief assistance and future resettlement plans in consultation with relevant officials.

The visit was attended by the Chief Incumbent of the Sri Sudarshanaramaya Temple, Venerable Bambaragahakande Gnanasiri Thero; Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways, Prasanna Gunasena; MP Thanura Dissanayake; Chairman of the Poojapitiya Pradeshiya Sabha, Sanjeewa Edirisinghe; Divisional Secretary Shanika Deegala; and other officials.
