Two Australian water sportsmen sailing around the island were washed ashore at Challai, Mullaithivu by the storm, the Disaster Management Centre said.

The Mullaithivu Police said the two sportsmen, David Ronald (41) and Pexton Iron Arthur (43), were not injured but their sail boat was damaged.

The two sailors who arrived on tourist visas last month had obtained permission from the Ministry of Defence to sail around the island. Embarking from Colombo last week the duo had stopped at Mannar, Point Pedro and were on their way to Trincomalee when they were pushed ashore by the tropical storm.

The sailors were provided transport to Kandy as they could not complete their journey around the country. (Sanath Desmond)
