TB spreading at prisons

Tuberculosis (TB) is fast spreading among prisoners and jailors at prisons around the country with the highest number recorded from the Welikada prison, Commissioner General of prisons Major General V.R Silva told Daily Mirror online.

The prisons chief said that a special ward has now been opened at the Welikada prison to house those suffering from TB with some 70 prisoners and detainees already reported to have contracted the disease.

Major General V.R Silva said that measures have been taken to transfer prisoners suffering with TB to the Welikada prison from prisons around the country in order to contain it from spreading.

Meanwhile Rehabilitation and Prisons Reforms Minister D.E.W Gunasekara visited the Welikada prison today to look into the wellbeing of the prisoners and was briefed on the spread of the disease. (Daily Mirror online)
