All the existing taxes on rice imports were removed and a Rs. 5 consumer goods tax per kilo of rice imposed with effect from today, the Ministry of Finance and Planning said.
The Cooperatives and Internal Trade Ministry today imposed a price control on rice after several complaints were received by the Ministry that retail traders were selling rice at exorbitant prices during the festive season.
A kilogram of de-stoned Samba, other than Keeri Samba and Suduru Samba, will have to be sold at not more than Rs.77.
The maximum price of a kilogram of white Nadu at Rs.68; a kilogram of red Nadu at Rs.66 a kilogram of Sudu Kekulu at Rs.66 and a kilogram of red Kekulu at Rs.60.
The new prices will be effective from midnight today, the Cooperatives and Trade Ministry announced.
