Strong winds now, El Nino later

Sri Lanka could be affected by El Nino effect during the latter part of the year bringing rains during the months of October and November, the Department of Meteorology said.

A duty forecaster attached to the department told Daily Mirror that all parts of Sri Lanka expect the North would experience wet weather because of the phenomenon.

However, it was stressed that there would not be a strong correlation between Sri Lanka and the situation in the rest of the world but there would be showers or thunderstorms.

El Nino is a phenomenon that is caused by continuous warming of ocean waves results in tropical thunder storms in the countries which is closer to the equator and wetter winters in some countries including those in the North America.

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology predicted strong winds which may reach 70- 80 kmph in the Central Province during the coming days.
Showers were expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces and in the Galle and Matara Districts as well.

In addition showers or thundershowers were expected at a few places in the Eastern, Uva and North Central Provinces during the afternoon or evening.
The department warned the general public to take adequate precautions to minimize the damages caused by lightning strikes.

According to the department there had been few showers in the country during the last 24 hours ending on Sunday afternoon with the highest rainfall of 10 mm recorded from Kukuleganga.

In addition a rainfall of 7.8mm was recorded from Canyon, 8.7mm in Mausakele and 3.3 mm from Norton.
Other areas in the country were relatively dry. (Yohan Perera)
