Situation still not under control

The tense situation prevailing in the Magazine remand prison in Welikada is yet to be under total control. Despite the heavy presence of the military and special forces the situation within the Magazine remand prison is still tense due to heavy resistance from the inmates. Law enforcement authorities have been unable to move inside the prison.

Inmates suspected for drug offences are suspected to be involved in the chaos that took place this afternoon. The police did not comment on whether the suspects were fired at by the police.

LTTE suspects were removed from the prison at around 3.00pm and moved to the main prison complex due to the fracas. (HF&SD)
